Quick Question About the Painted Tailgate Handle

Hey guys,

The local paint shop said that they can colour match my tailgate handle but they can't guarantee that the paint will stick reliably. I told them about how many people on this site have done it and they use primers for plastic, however he said he still would not guarantee that the paint would stay on for a long time.

Any thoughts on this? Am I in the wrong, or is he not knowledgeable on this subject?

Hopefully Josh (loosebolt) will see this note and offer up his advice. He painted my handle as well as a quite a few others. He did spray it with some kind of adhesion promoter if I remember correctly. Your paint shop should know about these types of things. If not, time to find a new one.

Almost no paint shop will guarantee adhesion to plastic
parts. Just too many variables. This is the opinion of
a professional painter that lives across the street from
me also. It might stick for years, and it might peel and flake
in months.... Either way, I think they use a "plasticised"
paint for these parts.

Thnaks guys! I appreciate ths replies. I guess I will take the 40 dollar plunge and get it done and see what happens. I'll keep you guys updated. Is there a factory paint code I can follow or should I just say 'Bright Red Clearcoat'?

RTKILLA and VINNIE.. how are your handles holding up?

My new one is perfectly fine, the guy who did them both used a plastic primer and they where scuffed up good and sanded back down.

Mine looks just like vinnies except I don't have a lock now,

It didn't cost me anything. I took the handle right off Killa's truck.(Not literally),that would have been a long ride just for a tailgate handle.

I really don't know cause my guy did it for free with left over paint that I had for the first one.

the second one that I got done he did when he fixed the bed of my truck, the door that got keyed and some other minor knicks and scratches, so that was 1000 bucks of paint and body work.

I forgot what I sold that tailgate handle to vinnie for? That was back when he was a newbie and his truck wasn't blinging!!

Since I was a newbie. He charged me $300 dollars for it. Something about how it was off the 'Leader of the whippersomethings' truck and that it had been Nitrous tested or something. He wanted $20 more to sign it , but I didn't have the money for that

Do a search on the classifieds. Someone was selling painted handles a while back.

I painted my own about a year ago and so far no problems.
