Question Thermostat question.

160 or 170?

What brand? Autozone generic or brand name?

Where to buy? Autozone generic or vendor supply?

Simple questions. Need info and opinions please.

Thanks.

Why do people change the Tstat? To help prevent detonation? or do they help add power?

A cooler thermostat can help some what with detonation but it really does is allows the ECU to add more fuel because the engine temp is below lower than the pre set temps in the ECU. Temp sensor shows engine is still in the warming up stage and more fuel or a longer injector pulse is the result. In high boost motors the richer fuel mixture has a cooling effect and will help with detonation. The down side is little heat on real cold days. And possibly lower fuel mileage. I did this on my 11psi SC Miata and it seemed to help here in the 100+ deg heat.

Actually that's not true on our trucks. There is no engine management changed by ECT until you get down to 130*. The above is true about the older 5.0s, because those cars WOULD go into cold start tables under 160. Putting a 160 in our trucks is perfectly fine; I run one, I sell them to all my customers, and they work great. The stock therm is a 180*, which we typically see a normal engine temp of about 190* with that stock stat, and then with the 160 we see operating temps of about 170*. So basically the truck usually runs about 10* hotter than the stat used, and the 160 drops temps 20*.

Hope this helps.

Ok, so what's the reason for getting a colder TStat?

A cooler running motor doesn't heat the intake charge as much and also keeps combustion chamber temps lower, which result in reduced NOx emmisions, lower EGTs and more power. We like power .

hmmm.... more power.... about how much can one gain simply by installing a 160* stat? I am getting ready to install a 4 pounder, and maybe a stat too!

Cool

I run the Hypertech 160 and my head temps (according to Autotap) are between 172 and 174.

There was plenty of heat when it was 20 degrees outside.

Thanks fellas. I appreciate the info. L-tuner: how much are your t-stats and how much to ship to Tulsa. I would by from a supporting vendor before anyone else, that is if my local Autozone didn't have one, no offense.

Thanks.

David

Nevermind L-tuner. I just noticed that you were PSP. I've seen the t-stats on your website. Thanks for the info.
