That ticking noise may be a loose plug. Keep driving it and it
could launch and destroy the head.
This weekend I'll be changing the plugs ( not), and pulling the passenger side valve cover. I'm really thinking it's an exhaust valve lifter gone down or a bad spring.
A week ago I went out to the desert and really opened it up.
A couple of times coming out of a turn in a sand wash, nailing it I looked down and the tach was over 5300.
Could've screwed a valve spring or worn a rocker.
The good side is if I have to replace anything I'll go with better parts so I wont have to worry next time.

I have the same issue. Started after my first oil change and there are some pretty hefty threads talking about it.

Just think of it this way.

Piston slap is your friend.

Forged Pistons for Forced Induction.

It is impossible to set up the Lightnings forged pistons to tighter tollerances where there is no slap without it wiping out your cylinder walls or the piston itself!

The clearance is there due to the amount of expansion of the forged piston vs the the cast iron block / cylinder.

The other alternative is to limit boost to a "safe" 6-8 psi and use non forged pistons.

As far as re-sell and slap noise, just sell your car while it is warm.

PS - The blower rattle noise will also increase with miles. AARGGH

This thread showed up just in time for me. I noticed the diesel sound comming from mine while in a drive through yesterday. I have been all over that darned engine trying to figure it out.
Mine only has 700 miles on it and I did my first oil change yesterday just before I noticed the sound. I guess it is normal.

This to me does not sound right and if it is normal then why are there not more people talking about a knocking sound with there lightning? He also stated that there was a Ford Bulletin about the piston slap which he is to give to me when i pick the truck up.

Just wanted to know from you guys if this sounds normal and if the short skirt is correct from people that have taken the pistons out of the truck?

Thanks

It's piston slap alright, but it's not normal. The only thing normal is Ford side stepping the issue and not wanting fix it. Anyone with any clue at all knows that piston slap is not normal.

I think i traced most or all of my noise to my blower rattleing at idle.
