Why even have mufflers?

I just wanted to know if anyone doesn’t have mufflers? And if there is something wrong with doing this?

Johnny Lightning had removed his muffler and cats at the NMRA event last year at Reynolds, Ga. He told me it was just too loud and he was going to go back to something more 'normal'. I d/k what he put back on but mufferless, it was no 'fun', soundwise.

I gor into the high 12s with the OEM exhaust on.

My truck when closer to stock seem to lose lowend[tourqe] and gain mph [hp] but it does sound kind of ghetto, not to mention the 2k drone, and you can forget the police mistaking you for a regular truck in traffic = more tickets and unwanted attention.

There's a guy in my SVTOA club that has a True Blue L and he has straight pipes for the mufflers. I'm picky when it comes to the sound of a V8, I hate the big chevy's that have the 3 in tubes out the back... His sounds like an aftermarket exhaust, not ratty and not too loud at all. If you are concerned about HP loss, he pulled a 370 HP with the pipes being the only mod..

When I make an exhaust change, this will be what I do.

370hp? So he lost 10hp? And to anyone wanting to know why i am thinking of doing this: I have Magnaflow mufflers now and the damn things are rattling together. I am faced with either having to figure out how to stop this(not really a big problem) or cutting them out and putting pipe in.

that is 370 to the rear wheels , not crank.

I would have to see the dyno though. It could be standard numbers (which are usually higher) and not S.A.E.

i run straight pipes and i love them. the sound is not "nasty or raspy" at all. it doesn't sound like your average late-model mullet-mobile silverado w/ the two pipes coming out the back. it has a deep low rumble to it and at WOT it's absolutely deafening.

i'm 19 years old though. i dont mind the slight drone on the highway (i dont do much highway driving and its not as loud as i anticipated)...

all i can say is that it's definitely not a tame unit. it was just an experiment for me being pretty cheap so i'll switch to something else when i get tired of them.

by the way, they are straight pipes AFTER the cats, so i retain the cats. stainless steel 2.5" tubing w/ stock tips.

as for power, i didn't notice any low end torque nor did i feel any horsepower improvement in the higher rpms. no real SOTP feel....

ditto, running no cats and straight pipes, definingly loud, no drone at 60, absolutely no power loss at all (its all bs), i just cap them off when i dont want the loudness anymore. its pretty neato, if only i can find away to fit my cutouts between my upcoming LT's and then put some mccord power plates on and that would be awesome. then add in the cams im putting in, should give me a nice loud lopey idle

13.899@99 stock down to the filter w/ 17k miles and a leaky intercooler. (low 14s/high 13s average)

13.603@101 w/out the muffler otherwise sotck w/ 17.5k miles and a leaky intercooler (13.7s average).

nuff said.

You can see what I run now in my sig. I think I average 13.2-13.3@104+ with 2.05+ 60's with a JDM chip, 90mm maf found on 01+ models, and a JL bigmouth filter thats dirty.

I've done quite a bit of 1/4 mile passes and I have plans to start databasing them...
