added boost and WOT runs

I would love to add a 4lb pulley and probably am going to but I hear alot of guys saying you shouldn't drive fast(highway) or do top speed spikes with added boost. do you guys with 4# or more just not drive over 85? I love the stop light to stop light driving but on those late nights home from work when the highways empty i just can't help it, not like I keep it pegged but what's the truck for if your going to keep it at 55? I'm sure I'm not the only one who ocassonially likes to drive fast, i just dont want to throw a 4lb pulley on there and then post here in a couple months saying my engine blew while cruising home at 100 on highway. i take care of my truck, high octane all the time fuel filter and oil changes, check plugs regularaly, etc. i'm even a bit paranoid about the truck, I had my friend bring me 5 gallons of racing fuel when I though I heard detonation on the side of the road. but should i keep it at stock boost?, maybe 2#?, i would like do to 4# and most likely am, would it help telling my tuner that i like to drive like ****#$@ sometimes? i wouldn't mind being down 10hp just to be safer when driving fast? what you guys think? or am i just paranoid and should just throw the 4lb'er on there and not worry about it.

That's a good question. If I understand it correctly, RPM's are the real rod killer. It does seem like alot of the blown rod posts involve some high speed highway runs...meaning 130+ MPH.

I was thinking that the idea was not to get into WOT at high speeds to keep the RPM's down....

wkuper11,

I really don't remember reading any posts where anyone ventilated the block going 30 MPH. But I suppose it could be.

Maybe one of the more experienced posters will jump in here and offer something intelligent...LOL.

I plan on going 6# lower and 2# upper week after next. I am getting the tune set up nice and fat on one side for street and high octane race on other for track to avoid detonation during daily driving or if I get bad street fuel. I also plan to take it easy on highway driving to be safe. I am mostly interested in the track times. Going 140 MPH on the highway is not my plan.

going 140 on the highway is not my plan either, just sometimes i get that urge, and hell i didnt just by the truck to go the track, and i know im not the only one who's modded their truck and still like to ocassionly drive fast on highway. if some ricer pulls up next to you on highway are you going to roll down your window and say hey, i would but i have 6 lbs extra boost and I dont want to drive over a 100 because i have weak rods and am unsure of my tune? ..........just a thought

LMAO...yeah, I see what ya mean. Hang in there, someone will respond with better info here. I really think the biggest threat is when you combine a high RPM situation with some inaudible detonation at a substained run and the combo kills you.

If your tune, plugs and gaps and fuel is a good fuel...I really think the risk is less.

I've got a 6lb lower on my truck, stock plugs. I've done QUITE a few blasts down the highway at 140+, and haven't had a problem yet... (knock on wood).... Like I said, though, these were short blasts - I wouldn't DARE hold it there for more than a second or 2! (Not to mention, this thing is SCARY at that speed...)

Otherwise, I plan on picking up an REM short block soon, so I can see what it'll REALLY do. But, you should be fine, as long as you're smart about it!

Let me see if I can halp

Ive had a 4# pulley on my truck for 8000 miles with no problems at all, I have never raced my truck but I do have a heavy foot and I do get on it every now and then. I also have a superchip flipchip with a warm weather cold weather program, I havn`t had any problems at all, go ahead and add a 4# pulley and enjoy the added power.

Larry.

The day I can't put the pedal through the floor and HOLD IT THERE is the day I drive it through the showroom window with a loaded shot gun.

I didn't buy the fastest got dam truck on planet earth so I can't drive it fast. THAT WOULDN'T MAKE SENSE WOULD IT ???

I've done 140 MPH runs ""many times"", my last was over 130 screaming at 5700 RPM before I realized I forgot to turn on the OD (OOPS)

MY LIMITER IS SET FOR 58K

Never less than a 4lb lower, in the warm months I also add my quick change 2-3 upper on top of the lower. Be more concerned about a clogged fuel filter or injector, and don't worry about your rods.
BUT YOU MUST PUT IN COLDER PLUGS IF YOU LIKE LONG WOT. and make sure the tuner is told this.
I suggest Denso IT-22's for plugs

Thanks Rob,

That's the same plugs I am getting for my plans. I guess i'll buy a case of fuel filters and change them at every oil change.

I appreciate the info.
