Anyone ever have this done>???

Well as some of you know I broke my leg back in Spetember. I went to the doctors 2 weeks ago and he told me it has stopped healing. He said the only way to fix this is to do bone "graphting." He is also gonna take one of the screws out for my rod. So have any of you fellas had something like this done. I am a little nervous to say the least. I really don't wanna be on crutches for another 3 months. I hate those things with a passion!!!!! So have any of you had this done and what was the outcome>??? Well I go "under the knife" next thursday the 30th. Wish me luck folks. I just wanna walk again. -Mat-

SVT.... Bone surgery is never fun! Speaking from experience, Bones are strange things when it comes to healing. It takes a lot of time and plenty of pain.

17 years ago (when i was young and stupid) I wrapped a 900 Ninja around a tree.. Suffered a compound fracture of the left femur (thigh bone) left arm, and pelvis. To make things interesting I also landed in a large patch of poison ivy! After nearly cashin in tiwice, three surgeries, 18 weeks in the hospital, another 6 months on crutches, a final surgery to remove the rod a year later followed by many months of therapy things were mostly back to normal.

Bottom line. Do what the doctors tell ya and Push your self as much as the pain will let you. Dont give up.

Good luck

-John

SVT F15O, First let me say, good luck!

Second, I work at a dental implant co., and bone grafts are very command when putting in implant. I have seen LOTS of case study's and the bone grafts do very well! You will do just fine!

Thumbs up

Hey man, been there done that, had a bone graph done over a year ago, they used powered cadavir bone to fill in the missing spot in my left leg, better part of 3 inches where replaced, and it healed up fine. If your doctor says to do it, trust his advice, he knows what is going on. The pain issue will go away after time, but the stainless steel is forever!!!!

Thumbs up Thanks.

Thanks for all the thoughtful words guys. I appreciate and they made me feel a little better about this whole situation. I just want to get all this over and done with. Being in pain for almost 5 months now is no fun. I am sure a lot of other people have it worse then me....I feel for all of you! Thanks again guys! -Mat-

GOOD LUCK SVT
Sounds like it's a good thing that will help when all is said and done. Sometimes you got to step backwards before going foward again.

I have never had that done, but all I can say is get a second or third opinion. It probably is the best thing for you anyway, but I have seen too many instances (with family and friends) that what the primary doctor was recommending wasn't always the best. Don't automatically accept the first doctor's opinion as being the best. Go see someone else and ask every question you can think of whether it is good or bad.

What your saying is all true. The doctor said maybe we can try bone stimulants. But they don't always work then the time you take to see if they do is wasted. I just want this done with so I can go back to doing the things I love. If I wasn't working for family and a part owner right now I would be screwed. My brother is helping me out by taking up most of the lack. I couldn't ask for a better brother. Love ya Jim! HaHa. Do we have any doctors on this forum>??? -Mat-

Before I had my spinal fusion the doctor told me that Smokers had a lot higher chance of the bone not growing correctly and that some surgeons will not even do the type of surgery I had on Smokers. I was a smoker of 15years at that time. At first I thought he was full of ***** and just telling me that because most all doctors do now days to get people to stop smoking. I did some research and found that he was correct! It seems that smoking constricts blood vessels and bone tissue trying to grow uses very small vessels so in smokers those vessels do not allow enough oxygen to the cells so it doesn't grow as fast or worst case not at all!

I stopped smoking (had tried for years this just gave me the extra drive I needed to quit) before my surgery and have never picked up another one! The bone in my back grew quickly and IMO its only because I quit. Beside I love not being addicted to anything other than power (i never plan on giving that up )

Hope I didn't sound like a commercial. Its just that I would have never known how smoking affected stuff like that had my doctor not told me and got me to looking.

If you do smoke now it would be in your best interest to stop before your surgery.

/steps off soap box....

Good luck and Hope you have a quick recovery!

johnie

Once again thanks everyone for the good words. I do not smoke so that is one thing I don't have to worry about. It is weird how it effects that though. My doctor told me that when I broke my arms and fractured my back several years ago(I guess I will never learn). I would rather put that $5 a day to something that is actually useful. Oh well. Thanks again. -Mat-

I won't go into how it is I know your correct, but AMEN brother. Everyday I wake up I wish I would have never picked up those stupid things. I am stuck with a constant reminder of how smoking damages other things, not just your lungs. Good luck SVT 150. I'll join the list of people praying for you.
