paint woes on 2000 Lightnings

doing some mods on my dad's truck saturday I almosed pucked!!! The whole seam underneath the front of his hood is all corroding, and the blistering has made it's way up onto the front of the hood. Looks to me like there is no paint on the seam what so ever. The topper is i took the cover off my truck the other day to get something out of the cab and noticed what seems to be a bubble of blister on my drivers side fender!!! Anyone else hear of anything like this???

In my dad's case, i would imagine the hood should be replaced given the spot where the trouble is, unless the grind an inch of so from the front of the hood and fill it, which i doubt my dad is gonna stand for.

YUCK!!!!

My paint is lacking quality is several areas. I would complain but fear I may get a crappy repaint that looks 20 times worse. If I end up doing a Navi front clip I might just reshoot the whole truck. There barely is any paint at the top of my fenders if it got buffed it would be gone. -Mat-

The orange peal on my 02 L is everywhere. I have the silver so it doesn't show as bad as if it were a darker color but is is bad. I talked to the head of the paint dept at a local dealer and he said if it was him he would not have it repainted. I guess the repaint would be worse than what I have now.

Have you ever thought about having someone that knows what they are doing wet sand and buff it>??? I was considering it on my truck which is black. It would probably look sweet if I did. But do to the lack of paint on the fender tops I have decided not to. Just trying to maybe giev you an option. If you do it send the bill to the dealer. -Mat-

The 99 I had developed bubbling on the bottom door seam - not good. It also had quite a bit of orange peel, and there was a nice run on the side of the bed that always ticked me off. To date, I have found absolutely zero defects in the paint on my 02... I am very pleased with it.

Hey tallimeca

Its not rust, because aluminum does not rust.
However, it may well be that the epoxy has squeezed out the
the inner and outer skins on the hood ,tallimecca.
It may also be a large gap between the panels where they were
hemmed together.
I would still take it to the dealer and show him. Maybe they will replace the hood. Did you compare it to another Lightning and see if there is a large difference?
I believe that hood came from the Chicago stamping plant, and if you can show that there is a large difference in it and one from another Lightning, or Expedition, as they are the same hood, then one of the district Ford reps. can contact Chicags and let them know that there may be a problem.
Hope this helps.
Marc

I think they would have to sand it down to the paint as the clear coat is not the problem. I think it is the silver paint that has the orange peal. I'm no expert so if someone that knows paint could answer this I would appreciate it. -Gary-

Paint repaired on 02L

I had a large piece of debris under the red on the hood and a "fisheye" on the rear panel above the side step. I debated a while on whether to get them fixed. I went ahead and had them done because I was concerned that if I hit the bad spot on the hood with a power washer too many times the paint would come off and look like a large rock chip and then the dealer would claim road damage. The unfortunate part is that it took them 3 weeks to get it to where I wasnt furious about the condition of the paint and clearcoat on the hood and side. The 1st time I came to get it the entire truck was covered in overspray and big buffer scratches in the hood. The second time there was still overspray and now someone dropped the buffer on the hood leaving a big mark. The third time still didnt look as perferct as I wanted but I was having horsepower withdrawls and I told them I was going to take it home and fix it myself and if I couldnt make it the way I wanted then it was coming back. I got it to an acceptable finish and now dont deal with that dealer any more. The whole process took over 3 weeks.

I have painted a few cars back a couple years ago and the "orange peel" would always be in the clear. That is how it looks on my truck too. That is one reason why they wet sand vehicles after painting. Just my thoughts and experiences. -Mat-

Why not just have the whole truck dipped in chrome? it would definetly weigh it down, but imagine the bling
