Something very interesting! Data Recording on 03 L.
You need to read Page 6 in 03 manual. States that computer is capable of recording information about the way you drive, performance of various systems, also speed, braking habits, steering in put , and accelerator application. Has this always been the case or is Big Brother now Watching?
WHat do you think?

this has always been the case, in the event of a problem, the PCM makes a recording of various sensors to help the service technician figure out what is cause of the concern and/or what type of conditions the problem appeared under. this is called freeze frame data
hmm i can see years from now you have to get your computer turned in for a test (like emissions) annually. and if they see that you've been speeding they'll ticket you according to the data from the PCM....
i dont know about you but i'm scared...or maybe it's because i watched "Minority Report"...

I have 2 opinions on this subject as im sure everyone else does. In 1 way this is good because they can tell a problem easily. On the other hand, they can tell when your speeding, and stuff, therefor... it sucks.

true, however, the information is only recorded in the event of a problem. example, I had a F-150 with a lean code the other day, but while it was in the shop it was not running lean while it was in the shop. I could look at the freeze frame data and see that it was running lean at 7mph, and the engine was at 180degrees, and the load on the engine was 75% and the short fuel trims were X and the long fuel trims were X amount. ETC. you get the idea.
The PCM doesn't just go around making random recordings. and it doesn't communicate these recordings to anybody except people like me and then it's only in the event of a problem.
Good example of the need for this would be Explorer 4.0 SOHC motors. there are numerous problems that could cause lean codes po171 & 174. these vehicles have a problem with the intake gaskets getting oil on them and shrinking or rolling over. this condition is usually only present when cold. because once the engine warms up, the gaskets expand and the vacuum leak goes away. If I get an explorer that comes in with 171/174 you could look at the Freeze Frame data and see that it only happened when the engine was cold. this would help point me in the right direction and prevent me from chasing after the wrong cause (ie: MAF problem or fuel delivery problem).
However, I did have a Sable come in the other day with a code that read something along the lines of "VEHICLE MAX SPEED OR ENGINE RPM REACHED". this means that either the customer ran the vehicle up to the SPEED GOVERNOR repeatedly or for an extended period of time, OR the customer used the vehicle's rev limiter excessively. All the same, I don't even think that this code alone would set a light. the vehicle also had an EGR problem with a stored code.

chris

superfords,
I think what he is talking about is that in the 03 book it does say that random info such as speed and such can be read by law and other such agencies.
Check it out, they make it sound like a big brother thing.
Rocks
