klez virus
klez virus
Guys, I am getting emails from people I dont know, and also returned emails that were sent to people I have no clue who they are. This is all due to what appears to be a recent strain of the klez virus. Here is a summary of what the virus does. http://antivirus.about.com/library/blklez.htm I have my system scanned with the latest updates and I am clean, in other words someone's computer is invected and using my email adress which it got from another computer, then sending emails out as if I was the culprit. With this type of Klez, usually up to 3 computers or more are involved, 2 of which may not even have the virus.
Check your systems and update and scan them, this is getting annoying as I receive up to 5 emails a day along these lines. I get paranoid and update and scan using norton antivirus everytime I get them. The person affecting me in particular would have to have me in their adress book.
Is anyone else getting odd emails along these lines.

There is someone on the L boards sending those bogus emails. If you did have that virus, you would have a real hard time using IE, Outlook and your system would haqve begun data corruption. I have tried for a few months to find the IP address of this person and was unsuccessful. I first started getting them after registering at NLOC.NET
Thats right about the from adress being fake, but using a few web systems that I am not familiar with it is possible to get the full header of the email, which will usually include the real adress which is infected. Someone on these boards is infected and sending out all sorts of mail they dont even know about.

I get 10 or 15 emails and email bounce notices or email rejected notices a week. Been happening for a year or more. My email addresses are posted all over a number of sites and the people who are infected have those sites in their IE cache. It appears as if the email is coming from
"FAQ@SVTlightnings.com" or "Silver_2000@SVTlightnings.com"
Trouble is there is no email cleint anywhere configured to send email as those people. They are valid "send to" addresses BUT all my email comes from doug@svtlightnings.com.
I even have people sending me threatening emails blaming me for a virus they got from an email that appeared to originate from one of my domains. Klez and its sister viruses have been around for a long time. Everyone needs to get decent antivirus that auto updates every week.
The newest virus "W32/Sobig@MM " is from "big@boss.com"
Seeing that my last name is Boss and I have regeistered BossHelp.com, I have been blamed for thatone as well... LOL
Oh well...

I think I actually received that particular email before, antivirus software ate it right up. All anyone has to do is scan their computer with the latest updates to get this taken care of. Its not even my crap email adress that is having this problem, its my email adress that I dont give out to many people at all that is having the problems. Anyone with my personal email adress should scan their computer asap. This is so annoying, I'd imagine even more annoying for Doug though as he gets threatened everyonce in a while.

Linux is pretty cool. I use it a lot at work. I prefer Open BSD for a lot of things. At home, i run several Win2k Server Boxens and XP machines, including the laptop. *nix derivatives are immune to a lot of viruses but not all.
I heard the new Opera works quite nice. I havent bothered to look into it but i might today considering i just installed Mandrake 9.0 into this box this morning.

There are a Whole subset of viruses that are specific to Linux or also affect Linux. The number is not as high as windows BUT the number of client Linux machines is likley closely related to the # of viruses. Also there are fewer resources for battling issues in Linux should you get one...

For those who dont know Linux, it's time to give a shameless plug to endorce the opensource community

Doug, yes, Linux is vunerable to some virii. But remember, Linux is only as good as the guy administering it ... if you know what you are doing, then those virii arent really much of a concern, just keep your system tight and locked down. I'm would be willing that most if not all software that those viruses attack are already patched and no longer vunerable to a system set up by a competent sysadmin ...
This is a subject that could be debated for ever ... so I'll drop it since it's not appropriate here ....
