Question M3 or lightning

a girl's brother at my school got an M3, brand new. Who would win, the M3 or a lightning. If the M3, what mods would it take to make the lightning beat it. Also, i know your guys are usually a big help to anyone interested in buying an L, well finally i think i may be getting one, when i go to college i'll be getting $150 a week sent to me from the courts, so thats $600 a month, if i put around $6,000 down, anyone know how much financing will be for 4 years. Also is that X plan still going on or any other plan that might make it a little easier on me. Thanks a lot guys. Later all.

If the M3 is launched hard and shifted well, it will win. But finding an idiot that will clutch dump at like 4k RPM regularly on a $50k plus vehicle may be difficult. So, the Lightning would probably win light to light. Don't even think about it from a highway punch though.

As far as financing: assuming $29,500 X-plan price (rough estimate), minus $6,000 and amortizing over 4 years at say 6.5% (you may or may not do better), your monthly will be $557.30. Of course, throw on top of that, at your age, $175/month full insurance, probably $125/month for gas, and money for mods, not to mention basic maintenance items, and you are easily looking at over $1k a month to fulfill your Lightning habit.

I've done the high punch thing with one at about 60mph... stayed with him until we both got off it.

A little more road and it would be all his... point is though... I don't have the typical mods like most do and I stayed with him to a little over 100, side by side.

The M3's are great cars. I have heard of a few engine failures, but that is normal with any hi-po vehicle. For 18,000 less, an L is a bargain. Also you have the ability to tow/haul things if need be. It comes down to how much you want to spend and if you need a truck. M3's hold their value very well, even trashed ones.

An E46 M3 will take your lunch the majority of the time. Agreed, most M3 drivers aren't dumb enough to drop their $3K clutch for chits and giggles, an M3 with a conservative launch will still most likely reel you in by the next stoplight (meaning you *can* win a stoplight drag, or you'll lose by very little). If it's open hwy after the light, he'll be extending his margin after the quarter (or after 100 MPH). From a roll under 30 MPH, you have a good shot, but don't even waste your gas if you're stock and he punches it from 55 MPH+. Unless you have a Factory Tech Valve Body, he'll have 2 car lengths on you by the time you've downshifted. You'll need a chip+filter to hang with one consistently, and a pulley if you are interested in edging one out beyond that imaginary wall of drag the L seems to hit at 110 MPH.

I still play with my BMW pals and have a lot of experience with the M3's (you will tear up the older E36 model!), but it would be nice to hear from other L owners, to see how they have fared. I've had my closest contests when the air temps are cooler (40-50 deg). A stock L doesn't have much of a chance if it's 90 degrees out.

X plan should still be available, and I believe you can find resources online that explain which affiliations qualify for the discount.

$125 a month for gas???!?!?!?!?!?!?! Come on. I couldn't live with myself unless I burnt that in a week

Oh yeah. M3, very fast, many mods needed to beat. My friend just got rid of his for a H2 and my chipped and filtered 00' would not touch it. He was dumb enough to rip the clutch on a daily basis.

I had a very nice encounter with an E46 SMG II w/ launch control.

I was stock, he was stock. We were even up at 150 km/h (aroud 95 mph).

I pulled his *** hard off the launch but he began to reel me in and if we passed 100mph he would have began to walk me.

Dont underestimate the stoplight potential of our beasts. Most guys around here don't know what a L is!

A a modified L with normal bolt-ons can take a 2002-2003 M3, I have done it, and he went first.

I had a 4# lower and ran low 12's at the time (see sig).
