But Why?

This is something the truck will not miss.

Unless there is another good use for it it should only go in the garbage anyway.

The first time I ever went to fill my truck up ,the gas station attendent(who liked my truck) told me that I should cut it or I will get scratches from it hanging down.I cut mine right there.
When I went to work the next day I told my boss who owns a expy about this and he did not believe me ,so we went outside and took a look at his 6 month old expy.low and behold it was all scratched up from the cap just being let go and hitting the truck and from it swinging back and forth against the truck. Not deep scratches but definately scratches. He cut his off right there.

Just my 2 cents.

Does this count as a new mod for me then?

Your right Vinnie if you plan on keeping it off forever (which not all of us are) then by all means cut it off. I saved mine so when I sell my truck I can put it back on and it will be like it came from Ford. I just think some people get too excited too quick and don't take their time on projects.

Case in point (not to get on RT's case) but why poke a hole in the stock tranny pan when going to a deep sump. Just take your time and do it slowly. It might take 10-15 minutes longer but hey I just sold my deep sump pan and filter when I put the stock one back on, why........well because I took my time and saved it.

Maybe that's my a lot of people are afraid to install long tubes. Because all the horror stories of others saying they needed to raise the motor, remove the starter etc etc.........again just take your time, none of that needs to be done. I didn't have 1 problem installing them.

Off my box.....

Does the L have a different cord for the cap? I bought the locking cap from ford and when I installed it I just pulled the old one off and put the new on by pushing the end through the hole. I didn't have to cut anything.

Umm... you're saying "take your time" to a group of people who think a 400hp truck is too slow?

Pretty much the definition of deaf ears...

Well true but.......I doubt I am talking to the wrong group of guys.

Remember this is the same group who think the idea of a quick wash only takes 6 hours and consists of lying on their backs to clean the undercarraige. Also the same group who decide it is time to rotate the tires/change oil/fuel filter/check plugs "just because"

I had an 87 Astro Van and it had a a bracket built into the inside of the gas filler door that allowed you to slip the cap onto it while you were fueling up. It was a great idea and it would have been nice if more vehicles had that built in.

Joe,
I see your point and agree with you.A lot of guys (myself included) jump in right after eating a piece of pizza instead of waiting the 7 minutes.HEHEHE

Yeah the wife's 2000 Accord has that too.... I often wish my truck had one. I always have a cloth diaper in my truck and I wrap the cap in it before resting the cap on the side of the truck to fuel.... man I am a freak or something, or at least my wife says so.

Could someone please post the FORD part number and another source to buy a locking gas cap from besides the FORD dealership?

I think I maybe recall Stant selling one?

I did a search for gas* and looked back to May 2002 before I gave up.

Thanks!
