I'm thinking you could sever one end from the other to remove it. J/k
Seriously, I remember reading on here that the only way to get it out was to cut it. But I'm thinking you could reach up behind the back and pinch the tabs on the cord that keep it from coming out. I haven't tried it myself, but you should be able to get it out without cutting it.

I just cut mine also.

The first time I ever went to fill my truck up ,the gas station attendent(who liked my truck) told me that I should cut it or I will get scratches from it hanging down.I cut mine right there.
When I went to work the next day I told my boss who owns a expy about this and he did not believe me ,so we went outside and took a look at his 6 month old expy.low and behold it was all scratched up from the cap just being let go and hitting the truck and from it swinging back and forth against the truck. Not deep scratches but definately scratches. He cut his off right there.

Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, just cut it...no big loss...exept when you leave the cap on the sidestep after fueling and drive away like I did....then ya lost the 10 bucks your going to have to pay to replace it....

I took a small screwdriver with a 90' head and pried it off. Came right off

Go to your closest Ford dealer. That's how I got mine and it comes with its own key(small in size and is a Ford part.

I just wedge the cap on top of the pump, so i never forget it, and it doesnt rub on the paint. Works good enough for me.

Left the cord intact.

You don't have to cut it........jeez guys take your time and just remove the rubber grommet that holds it in. It takes all of 30 seconds to push the grommet through from the back.

Have to agree with soap, just reach under the tire well, you'll feel the grommet, just push it out( you'll have to play with it a little) and then your all good to put in your new locking gas cap
