What kind of MPG are you getting? With the chip that I run I get 18 at around 75 to 80 and run reg unlead[just stay out of the boost]other wise you will have to use prem if you boost it.All in self control.Stan

How about an electric fan. That will give you more mpg.

Well example.. I filled up just before heading from work to the house we are buying, for my home inspection today..

Driving at around 80mph the whole time, and got into it with a few ricers on the way back (lol). When i got back by work, i saw that i drove just about 140miles total, and gas gauge was just above the 1/4 tank mark...

140miles on 1/4 tank seem right?
Will and electric fan really help?

thanks for the HELPFUL answers guys!

Well the tank is 28 gal and if [I know the guage is wrong] you divide that by 4 you are getting around 20 mph not bad more than I would expect.MY diesel doesn't get that.Stan

Hmmm. that is a problem. Either way your gonna end up spending some cash you need for savings. Buying a chip or going the e-fan route will set you back a coupe hundred which would buy you gas for three weeks or so. Do like me...buy you a work car and only drive the L like 150 miles a month Or maybe swap you in some lower rearend gears (numerically) According to how low you go that could net 3-5 mpg....but your acceleration will suffer and have to get your processor recalibrated.

WHOOOOOHOOOOO....Favre and the Packers are getting thier ***'s handed to them ! Go Dirty Birds !!!

Maximum i have ever squeezed out of a tank of gas (runnin on fumes) was almost 370. I dont reccomend this though (running below 1/4 tank for fuel pump cooling purposes)

You are going to have to calculate your mileage using an accurate method. (math)

Dont be decieved.. my 03 explorer gets the same mileage as my 02 l . I drive the same style in both trucks.

Smaller isnt always better, especially in a ford.

Blue02 makes a good point

I used to have a '96 Ranger 4.0 V6 that would only get 17 MPG on it's best day. If I drive the L "normally" 16 MPG is attainable on a regular basis, but if I start drivng "for fun" that all goes out the window. I think one factor in the two getting similar MPG is the fact that this truck will walk up some of the hills we have around here in OD without even breathing hard while the Ranger would downshift and wheeze it's guts out.

LOL, figures id already have that mod... I have chip, headers, cats, exhaust, intake, boost by pass, line mod and trans pan.. I dont think my MPG suffered much, comparing it to stock.

Just need to squeeze out a few more MPG, and the electric fan and water pump look like the solution..

Thanks for ALL the advice guys, you rock!!

Back in the '70s, the Federal Government reduced the interstate speed limit to 55mph for a reason – it saves fuel! You’ll be amazed at the MPG improvement that can be had by such a simple adjustment – I was. On the 2001 Hot Rod Power Tour, I caravanned with a great mileage-winnie friend. He wanted to see what he could squeeze out of his twin turbo’ed ’66 Mustang (11’s@121mph in the quarter). For 1500 miles I kept my L at 55 mph, and I netted 18.7 mpg – my friend managed to net 26.4 mpg with his 500+ HP turbo. If you’re serious about getting better mileage, leave the ricers alone, and keep your foot out of it – this will make much more difference than any chip or other hardware mods.

End of story......

What JoeLightning said...........You have to use math to calculate your mpgs accurately. You can't just look at the gauge and 'guess'. I get 14-15 mpg with my mods(except for the M/Ts--track only)--daily.

Plus, make sure your tires are inflated to 32 psi cold , don't let the eng. idle to warm up(Start it and drive it slowly for 5 mins. or so. The eng. will warm up properly as will everything else, i.e., trans., tires, rear end gear oil, brakes, etc. which does not happen if you just let it sit and idle.) Change over to a synthetic oil.

Some of the tuners make a MPG program for their chips.

Dan
