Touchy Subject ?

Well the subject in question is money ?

To be precise insurance premiums.

It is one of the few areas of life in the US that seem to be more expensive (Much more) than here in the UK.

As most of you know my KR is in store a lot of the time at a reduced rate with minimum cover.
However I have just told my company to put full cover back pending our return to the States.

The 6 month premium is more than I pay in the UK for 12 months cover on my S Type Jag.

I am also surprised at the reluctance of the company I deal with to give 12 months cover with one up front premium.

Any comments appreciated and if you are prepared to say what you pay for insurance I would be interested.

Cheers

lenny,

i have progressive insurance and pay $316 american dollars every six months. coverage is 100/300/100 with 500 deductible on collision and 250 on comprehesive. i recently changed to them from american family because Amfam wanted nearly 450 bucks every six months for the same exact coverage. and i have a spotless record!! but, i'm single and american insurance companies bend us single guys over and don't use any lube!!

anyhoo, i wish i could pay once a year for insurance...however, that would keep the insurance company from being able to raise rates every six months which is what they like to be able to do...

Thanks for that.

I use GEICO and their service is absolutely first rate.
However I still get to pay $360.00 for 6 months.
That's with a spotless (Touch wood) record of driving for nearly 40 years !

Doesn't compare too well with my Bentley here in the UK.
12 months full coverage and agreed value, for $250.00. (And yes that was converting to dollars)

Any other folks with your quotes would be interesting....how do the young guys afford souped up Lightenings ?

My 22 year old next door neighbour even here where rates are pretty good was recently quoted £3.500.00 (That's $5.250.00) to insure his Subaru WRX World Rally Car....and he complains about the ride quality!

What people do for image !

Well, mine has gone up steadily since I bought my truck in May of 2001. I am with State Farm, single, and I am a male under 25, which makes me the most expensive. However, I get most of the discounts (accident free, student, long time State Farm customer, vehicle safety). These discounts amount to more than $250 every six months, and my premium AFTER these discounts is now all the way up to $790 every six months for my KR 4x2, with full coverage including $250 collision deductible and $0 comprehensive. Coincidentally, when I bought the truck May 2001, my premium was only $450 every six months. This tells me how much insurance premiums have gone up since then. Lucky for me I turn 25 in January and I get some of that back, then I get married in May, so another discount comes then. I am just biding my time until then though.

wow!!! and i thought i was gettin the "shaft"!!

of course i'm 34 and live in the boonies which helps my rates considerably. i had a friend who used to live in new york city and he said that his insurance for full coverage on a civic was like 1k every six months!!! yikes...

btw, interestingly enough i used to have everything insured through american family (house, two cars, umbrella policy). when i dropped down to one vehicle they really began hosing me on rates. i guess that multi vehicle discount was a big thing. also, when i switched car insurance away from amfam, they never even bothered to ask me why?? and i'd never even filed a claim with them, ever!! you'd think they would wonder why such a good customer was leaving...guess not??

Certainly seems like insurance companies in the States are making good money.

In the UK every year after the initial premium is paid a "No Claim Bonus" is earned if no claims are made.
After 5/6 years the maximum bonus of 60% is allowed.
However for a small additional initial premium that bonus can be "protected" and even after a claim the discount is still good.

Never mind I suppose it all balances out with the ridiculous high gas prices we pay!

I would rather get something for my money. I hate insurance because all you're buying is peace of mind. They stereotype all over the place and get away with it, where other places would get sued for age discrimination or sex discrimination, the insurance companies can do it legally. What's more, insurance is required, and if you like to have a nice truck, you get the full coverage and pay out the ears for it. I can't believe that with all the competition the rates are still skyrocketing like this. It's outrageous. No wonder the last three people that have run into me have been without insurance and because of it I have had to make a claim on my insurance. What a vicious cycle.

so your saying they shouldn't profile, insurance is just gambling for the most part. if somebody gets in an accident or has a ticket then chances are better they will make a claim. heck, they don't profile near as much as they could as the backlash would be way too much. if everyone bought insurance then all the rates would go down so you can thank much of your high rates on a government that refuses to check up on these idiots who run around w/o insurancethey can't afford it then shouldn't drive simple as that. it says nothing about driving in the constitution, besides that, some people would be much better off on a bicycle than wasting space on our roads. unisured motorist is nearly half my premium for what it's worth.

Yeah, that no fault Ins thing really bites. You would think after all the premiums you've paid out they would have enough money to cover it, but instead the Ins. Company makes up the difference by raising your rates to pay for the damage. That way they keep their profit margins on you level, and/or use any excuse to increase the profit margin. Nasty business.

'01 SCREW, 5.4, 4x2, 19 when i got it almost 21 now. Insurance, with a spotless record, is around $1700 every six months. I hope this puts it into perspective for those of you not likeing your $350 every six months
