Used KR price

Okay guys and gals, I hope there isn't a limit to the number of posts were are entitled to because here comes another one.

Today I got a call from one of the dealers I have been talking to. Says he's taking in a 2002 chestnut KR 4x2 on trade tonight. 7000 miles, rear captain chairs, with ?sunroof. Says they want $28,500 and can finance it at 5.9% as a certified used vehicle. I tell him that's too close to x-plan on a new 2002 which I can get at 3.9%. Going to offer him $26,000 tomorrow.

I had decided I wanted the rear bench seat, but being on a budget this might put me in a price range I am confortable with.

Is $26,000 a good price for this one?

Your thoughts and comments appreciated.

You left out what year it is but, I'm assuming that it's a 02 because of the VERY low miles.

Check it over with a fine tooth comb, call the previous owner and play 843 questions with him/her... interesting that someone's trading one that quick... make sure there weren't problems.

Sounds like a great deal to me... Especially on an 02.

I have the rear captains and honestly, I LOVE THEM but, here's one of the kickers that I've learned after having it...

It's tough to haul things. Sure, the seats lay down in the back (after removing the headrests) but, the console sits up higher than the seats when laid down thus, you have a 'teeter-totter' point on anything that requires the width of the cab to back around (i.e. golf clubs -- which is my biggest gripe).

I do plan on putting a bed cap on my truck eventually (when the $ is right) and thus, I won't have to worry about that anymore but, for the time being, that's one of the VERY VERY FEW gripes that I have about this truck...

Check it out in full nude detail and, if it checks out, POUNCE ON IT! YOU'LL LOVE IT!

Rock,

I knew I was leaving out something. I went back to edit my post. Yes, it's a 2002. The guy is trading into a 4x4. Fordvehicles.com confirms they have a 4x4 chestnut KR in their inventory. So, I am inclined to believe the salesman.

kbb and edmunds have retail between $27,900 and $30,100

Given the above info, $28,500 seems like a good price, but I' can use x-plan and get a lower rate vs. used. So, at what point between $28,500 and $26,000 is it not a deal?

Marc

P.S. Rock, do your clubs fit in the floorboard?

That's my only gripe also, and it's minor. I take the head rests off and lay the seats flat, cover the leather console cover with a towel and lay stuff over the semi-flat area. Golf clubs won't fit on the floor. It's a trade off for having a nice big rear center console for storage.
Can't help you with price.

Same with me, but I have a cap so I don't worry about it now. The only thing I use the rear seats folded down for are groceries and books for classes. As for the price, I agree with your reasoning. You need to decide how much it is worth to you to get a truck with 7000 miles and whatever wear is on it, and subtract that number from what you would have gotten the new one for (not forgetting the financing savings). If they won't give it to you for that, then I suggest looking at forddirect.com for another dealer that has a new KR 4x2 you can get on x-plan. Don't settle just because it is convenient. I shopped around for months before I came to my decision.

No, my clubs won't fit on the floorboard... and neither will yours unless you are using a 5 year old's starter set that you bought for $19.99 at the local BIG K.... not your standard issue PING EYE 3's 2-AW with 1,3, 5, and 7 Calloway Bertha Woods.

Me, it's Taylor Made 360 Driver, Adams Tight Lies 3 wood, Taylor Made 3-PW FIRESOLE Irons, Head SW, and a Partridge in a Pear Tree....

Plenty of legroom but honestly, not a bunch of floor board room. The legroom in this truck is considerably more than what my 1998 Explorer XLT had...

I think that the price is a little high....since its used, use that bargaining power for you and try and talk them down to 23 or 24k. Just go to www.nadaguides.com and print out the invoice price w/ the options that it has and tell them that they have to bring the price down on a used vehicle....good luck on getting the KR!

$26k would be the most I would pay for used; around here new KRs are $29K ($31k for 4x4, 2wd very rare). 7000 miles is not a lot, but some people can really trash on a vehicle in that short amount of time. If the new one is only 3k more and you get 3.9%, that would seem like a better deal.

BTW - I just throw my clubs on the back seat, no need to fold down. Cleveland Launchers and TA5's

Rock,

That reminds me of a funny story. Mt roommate from college was 5' 3" tall. He had a 3 wood which was a kid's size. A Chi Chi Rodriguez club. He called it the Chee Chee Rodwigaweez. Most of the time he would pull that club out of his bag, pound his chest, brag about his club, and then duff the shot. Too funny but maybe you had to be there!
