Thunk

I have a 2000 screw with 23,000 miles. My screw has thunked from the start. Going about 15 to 18 MPH the give it a little gas and then THUNK. Dealer did not know how to fix it.

As far as I know, the "Thunk" is exclusive to the Lightning as it is the only one that has the slotted holes in the lower driver's side A arm. Other 4 X 2s and 4X4s don't have this exact Ford "El-Cheapo" mis-design.

Not that yours doesn't "thunk," it just does it for a different reason, or something.

Well, there are copius amounts of people (especially SCREW owners) that report this mysterious THUNK.

You might be right... we all might be thunking for different reasons. One thing is for sure... something isn't right.

Troy, you and I have seemingly identical thunks. You described mine to the 'T'.

rock,

i'm hoping to get mine in again this week sometime...i just hate having to deal with taking it out there (the dealership is relatively close) and then going back to get it...especially after multiple visits. i'm gonna talk em into a loaner like they gave me last time...

btw, have you ever taken yours in for the thunk? just wondering...

jaymz,

We referred to it more as "the clunk" on the L forum and it was caused when throwing the wheels to the stops especially in reverse (fixable with "Herbs Washers") I tried to get that fixed 3 times but never worked.

What these guys are talking about is a drivetrain kinda' thing when going from about a 15mph roll and giving it a little gas theres a "thunk" noise from below the truck.

I've not got it yet but with < 1000 miles I will be listening to my 4x2.

btw Jay, nice bolt! I miss my red 2k baby!

after about 5K I haven't noticed any clunk, but on the Expi it does 'thunk' when it shifts at certain times. Like the other day I was decelarating around a corner when the tranny downshifted. "gunk" Took it to the dealer once and of course they said there was nothing wrong with it. I did notice also driving my brother's 01 F350 automatic that it does the same exact thing. I'm going with the "it must be a Ford thing" right now.

Troy, no... I haven't had it in the shop. I'm almost worried to let someone look at it at this point in the game. I'm afraid that other problems will be caused by them going on a search and rescue mission around my tranny. My game plan on this is to wait it out. I have 14k miles which means 22K left on warranty. I'll probably run through the 3 years before I hit 36k miles however but, anyways, what I'm thinking I'll do is just monitor the situation. If it gets really bad, I'll take it in and also, I'll take it in prior to the warranty running out. That make sense?

Viper, I don't think our thunk is shift related. It doesn't do it between a 1-2 shift or anything like that... it's more of a 'slow down' (maybe a downshift?) thunk and even more prevalent (at least in mine) on the take off from a stop.

Pooh.... you'll soon forget the Red L. Heck man... what are you doing?!? GO OUTSIDE AND SMELL YOUR LEATHER! That'll make you feel better!!!!

Mine does much the same thing as RP. It basically is most prevalent when I am in second or third gear and punch it, causing a downshift which produces the thunk. Since there has been no fix to it, I haven't bothered taking mine in. I hate it when they say there's nothing wrong and it was a waste of my time.

Wow...it's nice to know I'm not alone....although I wish it was something better that I wasn't alone with. I have the clunk/thunk, 15k miles, do I dare take it to the dealer and pray something else doesn't go wrong while they're "playing" with it? I'll live with it for now....although it doesn't make me happy driving a $35k truck that makes all that noise at times. I say we ALL pull up in front of Dearborn and have em replace our trucks with new ones!
