daveman,

it only took them a little over an hour (based on the time they called me at work) to fix the truck so i doubt that they did anything more than what they said. but, yeah...i'll keep a heads up on the shudder.

if your truck is doing the same, you should go in and grill the local ford guys and see what they say. you know much more about that mechanical type stuff and could probably drag something out of em...!

Troy,

My dealer isn't on my way to work and I hate leaving my truck overnight. I'm probably going to fix it myself once we determine if it's a lack of lubrication or something else. The dealership is not a fun place to go and I get pissed off real easy when there since in most cases I can fix things myself but I need to take advantage of my warranty too. I may remove my drives shaft and the tail housing on my transfer case and investigate this myself first hand. If I do, I'll take some digital pictures so we can all learn more, me included.

Dave, at this point, you get an 'ATTABOY'.

Good job man. *tosses you a small piece of cheese*. There's more where that came from...

Hey Rock,

I'm sure you know it takes 10,000 attaboys to cancel out one screw up. That's why the working man seems to never get anywhere 'cause just about everyone screws something up daily, right?

Thanks for the attaboy anyway, 9,999 to go if I don't F-UP something before the day is done .

Later,

daveman,

just don't start "investigating" the shudder after you've had a couple vodka tonics...

Troy,

I thought only cap screws cross threaded. I mentioned the Vodka and Club Soda in another thread, didn't I? I looked under my truck today but I didn't get to removing the drive shaft and extension housing.

I've got 550' of fence to build and so far I've only finished 50'. That makes 500' to go or 9% completion in three weekends. It may be some time before I get a chance to disassembly my drive line and research the shudder issue.

hey daveman,

i was just perusing through my owner's manual (yeah, excitement!) and noticed a blurb about lubing the u joints and slip yoke on some vehicles. our trucks have sealed u joints, don't they? just wondering as i found this blurb interesting given the recent happenings...

Troy,

I may be wrong but I think what the book is refering to on greasing the slip yoke is a two piece drive shaft where there is a bearing assembly in between the two shafts and there is another spline there for connection. This spline must be greased often as it's exposed to dirt, water and everything that the underside of the truck is exposed to. Greasing the U-Joints is something that is periodicly required but not related to the splines at all. When U-Joints need lubing, there is a distinct sound that is made and I can notice it from across a parking lot and the noise is exactly matched to the RPM of the drive shaft's rotation, imagine that.

I don't think what you read and what the dealer stated they performed are related, in my opinion.

daveman, et al...

i guess i'll have to take back what i said earlier. my truck is still on rare occasions doing the shudder thing. although i don't think it's the slip yoke this time. and i do remember feeling a double shudder a few times before the slip yoke was lubed. anyhoo, before the yoke was lubed i'd get a pretty decent shudder when pulling up to a stop, but it would occur before i was completely stopped, and even at a fairly low speed. that sensation appears to have completely vanished, except for a sudden fast stop where i release the brakes before stopping. now, however, i've noticed that on rare occasions i'm getting a slight thunk as soon as i take my foot off the brakes at say a stop sign. this may have always been there but i didn't notice due to the real lurchiness i was getting from the yoke. anyhoo, dave i'm wondering if indeed the posi rearend might have something to do with it, but i can't figure out how. also wondering if the brakes are causing this sensation... any ideas?

btw, i'd like you guys to try something for me. it seems i can produce the shudder with some regularity if i slow down quickly from a fairly fast speed but then release the brakes fully right before completely stopping. seems to me the driveline has alot of force put on it when you are stopping from a fast speed and then releasing it quickly causes the shudder. anyone else able to produce this?? interested to see if any of you can ...

Troy,

I know I seem to dish out ideas and haven't been able to do many of them but hear me out. If one of us could figure out a way to mount a digital movie camera under our trucks and have it focusing in on the driveline and rear differential, I think we'd be able to SEE exactly what is shifting around on quick stops and acceleration. However, it's really the responsibility of the dealership to solve this problem but not even dealerships have the equipment mentioned or the concern to look into what I suggested.

Either we need to find out what's wrong on our own and force Ford to fix the damn thing or we'll just have to fix it ourselves. The other option would be to just live with it and hope Ford figures it out before we sell. I've worked on cars and trucks for a good many years but I've never seen a shudder from take-off like what my S'Crew is experiencing. I've almost always felt the problem was inside the rear differential but at this point it's only specualtion and a gut feeling.

If I had the camera, some assistance and about 2 days to tinker, I'd find the problem and fix it myself but I seem to be short on all of those at the moment.

Good luck and let's keep up the discussions.

Yeah, I've thought about it... Seemingly, everyone has been really busy lately. It's summer... tis the time to step away from the keyboard and live a little.

I'm just stuck behind a desk, until next week, pushing paper and thinking about what my next mod might be...
