Removing Decals from Paint...

I'm wanting to remove the pesky dealer decal off of my tailgate. As you can imagine, it's stuck DIRECTLY to the paint. I'm concerned that attempts to 'peel' them off might result in paint peeling along with them.

Any insight? Is there a trick out there that would aid in getting this damn dealer logo off?

Thanks guys/gals!

Razor blade is too risky. I took an old soft rag and pupt it around my trusty prying flat blade screwdriver so as not to scratch the paint. After it was heated up enough to soften the adhesive, I carefully stuck the rag covered screwdriver blade underneath one edge and pried very slowly. I worked my way further under the logo until it was removed. I then just used mineral spirits to remove the leftover gunk and it was done.

This is assuming that it is a hard plastic logo like the one my dealer used. If it is a sticker, a long fingernail may work better than a razor blade, as I wouldn't get close to my truck with a razor blade.

Soak some Acryli Clean on it wit a rag, it's by PPG or some other cleaner, good cleaner, and a razor blade is WAY too risky

If it's thin self adhesive stuff like a bumper sticker, you just blast it with a hair dryer until the adhesive softens and you can peel it off. If it's thick stuff, like a badge, it's held with double sided foam tape like the name badges are. Get some fishing line or strong dental floss and hold it between your hands and slip it behind the badge. Using a sawing motion, the line or floss will wear it's way through the foam tape. Once it's off, use a paint safe solvent to remove the rest of the tape.

I took mine off the tailgate the day I drove it home. Simple use of a hair dryer worked great.

I told the dealer not to put one on. Of corse, the detail dept didn't get the message. So I told him to take it off. He walked over and peeled it off with his fingers. Apparently, it hadn't set onto the paint yet.

Glad that one is done...

I can't stand it when dealers do that ****. Pains me even more to see so many cars and trucks driving around with those unsightly decals on them. I paid you for a vehicle not to advertise. I justs bought a F-350 KR and I have a good 7 inch sticker to get off. Never thought of a hair dryer to pull it off but sounds like it should work quite well. Thanks to those that posted it, I will try it in the morning.

If it leaves behind any adhesive residue, try goo-gone --NOT goof off-- It pretty well works on everything. You can even put it on stuff in the washing machine. You can get it at Home Depot or what-not.

Decal peeling

I struggled with this too when I bought mine. I had a decal on the tailgate, one near the drivers side where the KR badges are and one on the camper shell too. I tried a rag and soap/water, but no luck. Then I took it to a wand wash car wash and put in my loonie (Cdn), turned it to "hot soap" and put the wand nozzle on a sharp angle and squeezed the trigger. What do ya know the decals just peeled right off with the water! No damage done to the paint either. I finished washing my truck and saved myself a lot of work. I reccomend trying this before resorting to the other more complicated options.

Cool Fishin line

This is what my dealer branded me with

And per someones recomendation here, i tried working a strand of fishing line behind the badge, and it worked well, only a small chunk of ahesive left on the paint, the next day i scrapped the rest of the adhesive off with my finger nail when i washed my truck.
