Adding a Rearview camera

I have a 2008 King Ranch that has most options except navagation and the camera. I'd be interested in adding the camera if I already had the wiring in place from the tailgate to the mirror. What are the chances that I do?

Thanks Bob

Did the 08' offer a 'factory installed' reversing camera? I thought that was new for 09?

Yes, the 08's have them...I have them on both my F-150 and my Expedetion. My local electronics store will also install a reverse camera for appr. $175(without the in dash screen of course).

10-4, sorry about that. Did not realize that... Not sure on the pre-wire. Much of that type of thing is often installed on each but, as to this one, not sure....

Unfortunately the pre-wire would most likely not be there. It would take a whole body harness to wire for the video mirror.

Unfortunately, I cannot say if the wiring is there or not. I have the camera on my truck and absolutely love it. I guess you would have to change out the rear view mirror as well? When I put the truck in reverse it appears in the left half of the rear view mirror. I have a friend that might be able to answer the wiring question. I will ask him tomorrow at work.

I know i would have to replace the mirror. If the wiring were in place, I would be willing to do that.

Thanks
Bob

Ford put 2 different electronic mirrors in the 2008 F150s. The options were electrocromatic or electrocromatic with rear view camera. Unfortunatly the 2 mirrors have different connectors and the wiring is only available with the body harness. Have you checked on prices for the mirror and camera?

If adding the back-up cam after the fact, you can get the OEM camera and handle parts, but wire it yourself to the cab and put in a new headunit with dvd and screen. The mirror along is rather costly if the wiring is in place. It will not only be cheaper this route, much more usable and an upgrade (radio, outputs, customization of screen). IIRC a member here spent around $900 for the OEM unit from Tasca. That tiny screen in the rear view is so not appealing to me.

Yetti96 is exactly correct. The mirror, camera, and handle will run you about $1300 list at your local ford dealer. I have a Pioneer nav unit in my 2002 KR with backup camera and love it. Also gives you a bigger display than that in the mirror.

You're all right its too expensive to do. I'm now looking at aftermarket options.

Thanks
