Aftermarket Air Intake
Aftermarket Air Intake
Any of you have a after market air intake installed on your truck? Also if you do have you seen any significant increased fuel mileage from it? I have a K&N air filter installed but that is it. With the price of gas obviously getting worse and worse I am curious.
Doesn't this mod tend to hurt your gas mileage? (More air, more fuel needed to provide the proper mix). Of course, you get more power from this which should let you run with a "lighter" throttle, but, I suspect you lose some efficiency in the overall scheme of things.
A programmer CAN give you a fairly modest gain in mileage, especially since you can adjust the normal shift points down to get the engine up into high gear at a lower speed. But, I think you're going to have to drive a long time to payback the cost of the programmer for the slight gain it gives you.
This is what I think anyway, others may well have different opinions.

I am not a huge guru on these things but from just looking some of them boast about increased gas mileage. I really don't care about any horsepower gains. If I wanted to drag race I would have kept my Cobra. I know the K&N claims you will see increased mileage. I was just curious. I also posted in the air intake section, but prefer and trust you guys in here a little more.
the claims that i have seen are 1-2 mpg improvement but that was not my experience. i had a K&N FIPK on my '99 Lariat and saw no change in mpg. one nice thing, however, is that is did not seem to downshift nearly as often when going up hills at highway speeds.
I have an Air Force One intake system on my truck and have for several years now. I'm a big fan and did note an increase in MPG along with the addition of a custom tune.
My highway MPG is approximately 19 to 21 consistantly if I stay out of the pedal and roll around 65 to 70. (remember though, MPG will also be dependent upon terrain, geography, and oodles of other parameters!).

That is better than me Rock. I took a trip to Biloxi not to long ago and averaged around 17. Course it got to the point where we were doing 80 to 85 after what we thought would not be a bad drive, ended up being a bad drive. I only have 5k miles on it though so hoping it will slightly improve. I am averaging around 16 mpg combined (city & highway) right now.
Many people dont see any improvement because they are spending more time enjoying the power. IF you get an intake/tune/exhaust and keep the rpm's down and drive like a grandma... i'm sure you can see 1-2 mpg, maybe more.
I noticed 1 solid mpg when i put my 77 series back on the truck.

You may see a slight increase in mpg with an intake, but it will take a long time for that increase to pay for the price of the kit.
I installed an Airaid intake and a Magnaflow exhaust on my truck very soon after I got it. I get about 16 mpg. I live in a very rural area with low speed limits (<45) and very few stop signs or traffic lights.
IMHO your personal driving style can make more of a difference in mpg than anything else you can do to your vehicle.
BTW, I have a tuner with an mpg program for 87 octane. I get better mpg with the OEM tune. The power tune works great, but my mileage obviously goes down when that is installed.

I added the K&N, exhaust, and Cortex 1950 SuperChip I was averaging 14MPG now I average 16.8MPG and higher on the frwy... KR is a lot better to drive and gaining 2MPG is like adding $8 to your pocket.... works for me...
Magnaflow $550.00
K&N System $285.00
$1285.00 with gas at $4 a gallon that's over 320 gallons worth spent to get your improvements.
Changing the way one drives = PRICELESS.
I installed a Tru-Flo intake on my KR the day I bought it. I took it off of my trade. I drive like I have some sense and I see 19 to 21 MPG all day. So maybe it was the intake which I already had or maybe its just the way I drive. Anywya the Tru-Flo in my opinion is the one to buy simply because it leaves the air filter where it belongs on top of the intake.
