Remote Starter

I am thinking strongly of installing or having installed a remote starter on my 200r King Ranch. I think all I need is whatever is required for the remote starter as I have the keyless entry, etc.

Problem is what exactly do I need to buy? Does it have to be installed by a Ford dealer or can it be installed by a do it yourself (shadetree mechanic)?

Thanks

Remote Starter on KR

I've a 2007 F150 Screw KR. I'm in Maine and decided to have the OEM remote starter/security system installed. I did check out my local Circuit City and theirs was about $100. less than my local Lincoln Mercury dealer. (I have any warranty work done at the Lincoln Mercury as we bought my wife's car there and I detest the local Ford dealership,,,,but that's another story.) When I talked to the service folks they made a comment that was great. It was that by installing the Ford OEM remote starter it was covered by either a 12/12,000 or the remainder of my new vehicle warranty, whichever is longer. Couple the warranty info with the fact that should I ever have any problem(s) with the remote starter they, or any Ford/Lincoln dealership nationwide would have access to all the technical data to fix any problem(s), but they would not have access to anything Circuit City installed. Their quote to me to purchase and install the security/remote system was just under $500 ($100.00 more than Circuit City). To me,,,,,it was a "no brainer" to have the OEM remote starter installed. I did like it that the OEM remote starter FOBs intergrated well (with the Circuity City one I would end up carrying a second FOB on my key chain, which I did not want to).

Good info. Don't know why Ford just doesn't add it as a factory installed option, which for the KR's would of course be standard.

I put an aftermarket one on mine. Works better than factory too as I've got longer range on it. I've started mine from a hotel window at nearly 3/4 mile while my buddy couldn't get his to acknowledge. Great thing when we're in the desert to jet ski and it's about 117 out. By the time we get to the parking lot, truck is cool. Can add modules to enable heated seats, adjust temp., etc. but I really haven't found a need for it. No need to carry two key fobs either. And, I can program functions on the truck that I couldn't before, like the rear doors unlocking automatically when I turn the key off. Works flawlessly. If you do it, don't settle for anything less than an LCD fob so you can see what's going on with the truck. Mine is Audiovox and I've had it for over a year. Not one issue and I'm very pleased with it.

That sounds like a really nice system. What is the model number of your Audiovox? I would like to do some more research on this.

I currently have an Ultra remote starter, installed by the dealership. It works great, but it does not have any of those cool functions, which I now absolutely need to have.

If my Wife asks, I'm going to tell her you said I have to have this remote starter system, OK?

CompuStar Remote Start/Alarm

I have an aftermarket CompuStar starter/alarm unit in my 2007 SuperKrew KR. The unit has a rated range of 3,000 feet and is the two-way confirming type. Absolutely pleased with the unit. Some of the things you can do from the remote: check the inside temp of the truck, check the signal strength, lock/unlock the truck, fire up the heated seats (if you have the optional relay installed), etc. If the alarm goes off the remote will beep you (in case you are out of sight or sound range of the horn). Lot's of nice features.

I purchased a remote starter from the Ford dealers parts department. It was a Ford unit too.

Works good.
