My KR sound like airplane at 45 mph??

Truthfully, they're just way too complicated for me to even think of messing with them anymore. I was a gearhead in my youth and even did a year-long stint as an auto body apprentice in high school. But I haven't picked up a wrench and used it against a vehicle in years. My only remaining advice would definitely be to see a mechanic. Others have already suggested some of the other forums, which is a good idea because lots of Ford mechanics lurk in some of those and they are really knowledgeable and they are really helpful. Naturally, this falls under the "sooner the better" repair category. Even though you're only hearing it at a given speed doesn't mean there isn't something going on at all speeds. Hope it doesn't turn out to be expensive for you. You never know, it could be something pretty minor that's causing you all this angst. Git 'er fixed and off yer mind. That's what I'd do.
Sorry, that's all I got...
I saw the responses you got on the transmission forum, so I figured I'd drop this comment over here.
Ever since I got my truck (I've got an '03 KR), I've had a noise at similar speeds. It seems to get louder as I run 45-50, then it suddenly goes away as I get over 50. I suppose there could be a harmonic frequency (if you've never heard the term, think of that video of the Verrazano Narrows bridge collapse which is an extreme example) the truck goes through, but I've never felt any vibration associated with the noise. I'm inclined to think it's just some sort or road noise and have given up on finding it. I've got over 91k on mine now so it hasn't been a problem yet.

Drive Train Noise
I have been paying close attention since I first saw your note.
My KR is new to me in September 2007 and I too have been concerned about what I would describe as a drive train noise and late shift point.
I have a 2WD Chevy 2500 work truck and it seems to get into overdrive much sooner that my 4WD KR F150. The shift points also seem to be later and longer in the KR, contributing to the "wherrring" drive train noise.
Maybe we are describing the same situation.
I am a very gentle driver. I tend to accelerate slowly and evenly. Perhaps if I were more aggressive the transmission would respond differently - I will try it and keep notes.
I also seem to recall something about Ford power train control modules learning driver habits. If anyone could weigh in on that,it would be good info.
Anyway.....I cannot offer a conclusion but I am scheduled to buy some new F250 work trucks. I will keep you posted on the test drives.
Best regards,
Bill

Sorry Z-man.....I never lived out there so I forgot the bridge name. The wind began the oscillations which eventually hit a frequency that caused it to get worse and worse.
After I first posted, I also remember coming across a myth-busters segment once where they took some sort of actuators and basically created a hammering motion against one area of the bridge. When they hit the right frequency, they were able to feel the vibration about half-way across the bridge.

There is a TSB around for it...but not sure about the 03....Since you are in FB, I would call Jerry Fisher at Grand Prairie Ford.
You will have to take it in for a drive but its worth your time to check it out.
BTW do you hear it in speeds over 50 too? I heard mine all the time after 45 mph. It was constant and just got louder the faster I went.
