Bad Fuel Injectors

I'm sure many of you will be getting this notice in the mail shortly. Apparently those of us who own an '05 5.4l are prone to have fuel injectors either stick wide open or closed, either of which condition could cause some pretty heavy damage to your engine. Not surprisingly, Ford is *NOT* issuing a recall, but has rather extended the warranty *on fuel injectors only* to the odd number (literally and figuratively!) of 11 years or 120,000 miles. Funny thing is that "hard starting" is listed as one possible symptom. Not two weeks ago I nearly ran my battery down trying to start my truck. Had never happened before and has not happened again, but I now suspect this may have just been the first salvo (I do not yet have 13k mi on my '05 due to travel and the fact that I work from home when not on the road). I smell class-action lawsuit and I look forward to it. If Ford knows such a serious problem as this is ongoing, they need to issue a recall and replace all injectors now before any kind of serious damage is done, some or all of which may not be immediately apparent.

I value Ford much, much less as of today. The value of my '05 Ford is probably much, much less as of today. Shame on you Ford!!

My #5 injector got stuck OPEN a month or two ago and burned out both my Cats by dumping raw fuel in to them - any idea if this warranty is retroactive? I have the repairs well documented..

It's applicable to model year 2005 only and, yes... it's retroactive.

Per the letter that was sent to individual owners - I got mine in the mail yesterday:

If you paid to have this service done before the date of this letter and the repair occurred within the 11 year/120,000 mile coverage period, you may be eligible for a refund. To initiate a refund request, please give your paid original receipt to your dealer before June 30, 2008. To avoid delays, do not send receipts to Ford Motor Company.
Per the letter that was sent to FoMoCo Dealerships dated December 11,2007:

OWNER REFUNDS

* Ford Motor Company will only refund owner-paid repairs covered by this program if the repair was performed prior to the date of the Customer Notification Letter (or after the date of the letter if an emergency repair was made away from the servicing dealer), provided the repair occurred within the 11 year/120,000 mile guidelines. Refund claims that include other non-covered repairs, or those judged by Ford to be excessive, will not be accepted for reimbursement.

* The refund period for repairs performed prior to the date of the Customer Notification Letter will expire on June 30, 2008. After June 30, 2008, only emergency repairs are eligible for reimbursement.

*Refund Claiming Information. (Submit on separate repair line.)
-Program Code: 07M08
-Misc. Expense: REFUND
-Misc. Expense: ADMIN
-Misc. Expense: 0.2 Hrs.

I hope that helps a bit.

I, too, had two injectors stick open on me. It left me dead on the side of the road about 2 hours from home. Fortunately, I was still in my 3/36 and it was taken care of under that program.

Sorry I12AV82, I really only participate in this forum, so I didn't think to post this elsewhere (and no doubt someone who is a regular contributor to "engines" has brought this to the group).

RP has covered you pretty well with info on the refund policy. I still can't believe Ford isn't issuing a recall. This is likely the last Ford I will ever own as long as I live. I'm that pissed.

You know I got to thinking about his more last night. I spend a good bit of my spare time in the high country of Colorado. I would say 75% or more of the time I'm alone. I venture pretty far off the beaten path at times. I do this in all four seasons of the year. A frozen fuel injector could become a pretty dramatic issue for me. I may pay to have them all replaced myself or, if it ever comes to a stranding situation, may wind up suing Ford for millions of dollars for their indifference and their negligence. I just know 12 people would look at the facts and conclude that greed led Ford to make a choice punishable by n number of millions...

Just got my letter in the mail today - I'll head down to the dealer tomorrow to get my money back.

Luckily when this happened to me I was only about 1/4 mile from work before it was running too rough to drive - I would be livid if I had been in your position RP!
