cleaning leather
You'll definitely want to keep the steering wheel clean. It will soak up the oils from your hands very quickly.
Also, if you wear shorts, you will want to keep the driver's side seat clean.
...
Lemme rephrase that. Clean the steering wheel regularly. Clean the rest of the leather as needed. Keep it all conditioned regularly with your choice of conditioner.
...
Edit.
By cleaning, I mean using the spa treatment (hot wet towels). I can't vouch to any chemical cleaners on castaņo leather.

Well I personally wouldn't rub conditioner all over dirty leather (and a fine layer of nasty stuff will exist whether you can see it or not). So yes, you need to clean it as often as you condition it, which should be at least semi-annually. This can be done with a damp sponge and a dry towell or it can be more involved. I personnaly use Connolly cleaner with great success and it takes no time at all. I actually vaccum it before that using a brush extension just as a pre-cleaning measure. But that's just me.
Just as an example of practicing what's being preached...
I did my pre-winter detailing yesterday (and man do I hurt all over now). I did in fact both vacuum and wash my leather before conditioning. You would be amazed at how dirty my wash and rinse buckets were by the time I was done.
Of course, if I didn't drive unpaved roads with my windows down, this wouldn't be such a problem. But I love breathing in that mountain air, so I'm unlikely to ever change my ways.
Although my personal conditioning process takes upwards of a few hours, the washing part takes only a few minutes...
