Rattle in the dash?

Hey all,

Thought that since you guys have the same truck you might be able to help. I've got an King Ranch, 4x4, 07. I love the truck, but it's got this terribly annoying rattle from what sounds like inside the passenger side dash, maybe near the air bags. I've never had the dash opened to see if anything is rattling inside there, but I've tore dashes open on a few trucks and several cars in my life to know what to look for (car audio installs).

For those who've been inside the dash, can you think of anything that may have come loose and is rattling inside the dash on that side? Maybe something plastic and box like (just guessing from the sound).

I'm confident it started after I went over a man hole cover a few weeks ago and it sounded like something came disloged. Now it rattles all the time over bumps and drives me crazy. BTW: I do have the audiophile package with sirius....

Thanks!

Sounds like a gremlin...

Not sure I've heard anyone specifically reference the passenger's side dash from a rattle standpoint. Probably one of those mystery 'washers' or a screw that was dropped in assembly.

Not sure what to tell you, bud...

If you rip in, you run the risk of compounding the problem. But, if you leave it alone, it'll eat at your soul after forking out serious $$ for a rattle trap.

Damned if you do... Damned if you don't....

I can offer this:

I have a little sort of vibration and it is the door for the ashtray. Maybe mess around with that. It is an easy fix, I am going to stick a small piece of black foam, I think that should insulate the vibration.

I appreciate the suggestion but the rattle is a lot louder than what an ash tray can produce. If you turn the music all the way up you can still hear it. It rattles very loud, and sounds like it's either in the dash or just under the hood near the firewall. As the rattle slows you can almost hear a squeak like rubber on metal squeaking.

You say the truck is an '07. Take it back to the dealer, its under warranty.

Sounds about like mine. I'm thinking it's either near the airbag/glove box either inside the dash or on under the hood but very near the dash. I hear it just about over every bump. And if there are lots of bumps in the road there might as well be rocks and change inside the dash cause that's what it sounds like.

I've taken it in once and they found rocks/gravel on the skid plate that was rattling around and then just for good measure they "resecured" the air intake nozzle to the fender. It seemed like it quieted down but by the time I got half way home the sound was back.

In fact the more I think about it the more I agree that we may be hearing the same sound.

Have you taken your truck in to be checked out or have you done any investigating on your own?

No I haven't checked it out yet because it is just too cold out. When it warms up again I am going to take my glove box door off and see if anything is loose behind there..

Unhappy

I've got a rattle too. Mine's also somewhere in the dash, but it only sounds as soon as I step on the gas (even lightly). It's worse on a slight incline and at about 1700 rpms. You can't hear it outside or under the hood, just near the dash. It drives me nuts.

I've gotten closer to identifying the noise. When sitting in the truck and you close the door it now rattles everytime. It's definetely in the dash near the air bag and I can reproduce the noise. Going to the dealership ASAP. I'll keep you updated.

surprisingly enough (or not, depending upon your perspective) mine has the same thing! It's an '06, and it was making a very similar 'ticking' noise from the passenger side. I thought I had it all figured out when I noticed the factory left off all the little plastic fasteners that go under the wheel trim (little arizona beige buttons). Once I had them replaced it was still there! It almost sounds like there's a little wire or something behind the A-pillar, or glove box, that's tapping on something plastic when I'm driving.... very annoying. I'll have them look at it next time it's in for a service.
