Cold

Lately it's been cold here (-30 Celcius, -22 Farenheit). When I step on the gas hard, my '02 makes a whistle sound. This hasn't happened before when it was warmer. Is this normal for this truck? I put a K&N filter (filter only) on it - could it be that is a normal sound from a K&N?

I've heard others talk about a whistle/whine with the K&N filter...

I have a K&N FIPK, and it whistles all the time because it is drawing more air than the stock one.

No, I haven't heard anything about that. I hadn't thought much about it, so I haven't searched on it at all. I'll have to look around under the hood to see if I can see what you are referring to.

Mike
I'm not sure what you mean about the hose. (I'm not sure who Andy is either, but that doesn't matter.) I put the K&N (no FIPK) into the OE housing and snapped it back together. Is K&N suggesting that I remove that housing?
Is it just a coincidence that I noticed this in the cold or does it happen at all temps?

Chaos,

I am Andy, and Mike was referring to my FIPK statement (all of us King Ranchers know each other by name for the most part). It only applies to the K&N FIPK, not the plain filter.

I thought the problem was due to the fact that the K&N filter, regardless of FIPK or not, was a high flow filter and caused the air to whistle at the higher velocity because of the flow increase. Apparently I am mistaken about this. I don't know about just the K&N filter, so maybe someone else can answer about the plain filter noise.

I'm going to search this board, but if anyone else finds anything, send it along.

I have the K&N in Tomas and haven't noticed the whine....then again hard to hear the whine over the wind noise from the brush guard......but installed one in mom's truck (5.4L) and she has never said anything about a whine........and she notices every little tick, squeeck and whine in her precious baby.
