5 speed shifter **** removal?

Anyone know how to remove the rubbery shifter **** from my 5-speed 1998 F150? I pried up the shift pattern disc expecting to see a nut, but was instead greeted with a black plastic disc that resisted all attempts to turn it or pull it straight up. Is the shifter shaft even threaded. It stumped me for today!
Thanks in advance;
mootie

Just pull straight up, there is no thread on it. Helpful to wiggle it just a bit, it take some grunt, but it'll pop off. Just watch you don't smoke yourself in the forehead!

It does just lift straight up. I am looking for a replacement **** for a '97. Every time I shift I have to be carefull because mine comes off so easy. I have been to a couple of part stores but with every one I find the diameter of the hole is too small. I havn't tried going through the dealership yet mainly because of what they charge for that kind of thing.

when you pull your shifter **** off, is it threaded or is it a straight piece of metal?
