Scothguard Needed on Black Carpet?
I think it should be done to ALL carpets and fabrics. Even though your carpet is black and will hide dirt well, it's still possible to stain it and it will come clean much easier with it applied. It's much easier to get regular dirt and grime to release from the slick coating that scotchguard (and other protectants as well) forms on the fiber than directly from the fiber itself. Think of carpet/fabric protectants as teflon on your pots and pans, crap will clean off much easier!
As far as how long it will last that's hard to say, depends on the product itself, how often it's wet cleaned, and how much physical abrasion takes place. Remember it's a coating on the fibers so it will wear off with use and cleaning. A good test is after you first put it on and it's had a chance to dry and cure, drizzle some water on it and see how it beads up. Periodically check it and see if it's still working, the best place to test would be where the driver rests his feet, that sees a lot of wear. Personally I do it like twice a year.
