I'm not totally sure on this one, but at the chevy dealer I work at, to get the controls out of the steering wheel you take a small pocket driver and pry them out of the steering wheel. There are clips the hold the controls in the steering wheel. From the looks of it, I think Ford is the same, but I cannot say this for 100% sure.
