Soft spongy steering wheel

Anyone experienced what I can only describe as having a section of the steering wheel (usually the top section between 11:00 and 01:00 positions) become very soft and spongy???

( It's as if the material under the leather steering wheel cover become somewhat 'liquified' after exposure to intense summer heat on the dash and the top of the steering wheel, and is no longer firm and hard like the remaining lower sections of the steering wheel??? )

I've looked around and am unable to find any mention of this problem anywhere on the internet. I experienced this same exact problem on a 1991 Ford Aerostar as well!

Yes. My 01 supercrew with the leather wrapped steering wheel has done the same thing. Funny thing is, I almost never put my hand at 12 oclock on the wheel. I use my left hand at about 9-10 oclock.

Just a WAG, but maybe the sun and it's heat have something to do with the softening of just about anything exposed to it's extremes.

It's happened to my cousin's and my uncle's Exploders...hasn't happened to any of our cars with the leather steeringwheels...must be a Ford problem.
