Keys

1st post. I hope this is the right forum. Anyway, I just purchased my 1st truck, a 2001 F150 and it came with only one key. The stealership wants $125.00 to make a copy. I know its a programmable key but a buck and a quarter sounds steep. Is there a less expensive route?

Thanks

Yes, contact a local locksmith. As a locksmith I'm a bit partial to the profession, however, if you are getting charged more then $60-$75 you are getting ripped off. You could possibly even get one cheaper then I mentioned above if you call around a bit. I usually charge about $45 as long as I'm not having to make a service call so the dealer charging you $125 is completly crazy.

Hi, I was in the same situation as you about two weeks ago. Ebay has Ford keys anywhere from $4 to $15 and even some auctions are for two keys. I won two keys for $15. You can program the keys yourself. Just refer to your owners manual on how to program them.

Wow they wanted to charge you for a second Key?!?! When I took delivery of the truck I took one key, asked for the second, they said "I only have one key right now...but when you bring it back for the environmental package (which was free anyway) I'll have the other one for you." I figured since I had one key still at home for my trade in, we'd just trade keys - never thought about it.

my wife bought her car (recently) and they gave two keys. It must just be a dealership thing... My buddy bought a f-150 from the same dealership as I and he was given too keys too. I remember because he was soo damn giddy, he took me with him and I got to hold the 2nd key and all the paperwork on the ride home.

You need two programmed keys to program a new third key.

Unless something has changed, you can't program a new key with just one key.

I'm in the same situation. I bought my truck 2 weeks ago and the salesman only gave me one key and fob. I asked him for the other one and he said the person that traded it in didn't give them the other set. He said he would call them and see if he could get it from them and guess what? Haven't heard a word back from the salesman. Anyway, I'd like to have a spare set as well but am not going to pay the dealer to make me another one. I've also seen them on ebay for $10-$15 but wasn't sure if it would work.

As I said in my earlier post, I had only one key and one remote. I bit the bullet and had a locksmith cut and program another key for $85.00. I then, bought 2 keys off Amazing Keys on Ebay for about $20.00 delivered. I took them to my local Ace Hardware and they cut them for free. I brought them home and had them programmed in about 15 minutes. I also bought a couple remote entry transmitters for about $46.00 delivered and programmed them in about 5 minutes. I really appreciate the advice of all that responded.
