I have the '00 Lariat and believe that the console was new for the '00 Lariat and then extended to the XLT for '01 according to the sales literature that I have. I'd suspect that the wiring IS in the overhead for XLT models '00 and up, and perhaps the XL as well. However I'd also guess that you would need to add the exteriour temp sensor, that is mounted (I think) on the top of the radiator bracket. As to where to get the console, I'd suggest a junkyard if you can find a late model unfortunate enough to have been wrecked. The temp sensor on mine appears just to plug in and you can check other vehicles at the same time for the wiring to the console and temp sensor. Good luck.......the console is pretty handy
***Caution(?): I noticed that if you do put sunglasses into the holder in that console they get *awfully* damn hot when you park in the sun! Also must be true of any garage door opener you put up there in that spot they reserve for it. I don't use it, though, to avoid ruining it over time.***

Boxman, I have been to 3 different local boneyards and have not found one wrecked late model F150. They get scooped up quickly for salvage, etc. Just a suggestion; for a couple hundred bucks you can buy and install an after-market rear-view mirror for your rig that has the compass and outside thermometer. Then buy an overhead console (the smaller one) and nobody will know the difference. I have'nt done it yet as I have other priorities for my mods, but I have explored this one greatly! Good luck.

I checked with the local dealer about installing the overhead compass/thermometer in my 98 XLT truck, and I was told the parts were $200 plus labor.

2manyBLackf150, the dealer was Sill Terhar in Broomfield CO, I had e-mailed the parts department and that was their reply in the e-mail.

Boxman if your truck is a 99 or older then you don't have the wires for so you will have to install the wire harness along with the console if you do install one as far as I know the 2000 XLT's and Lariats came with it standard and was a option on the XL in 2000.
