Post Need help, airbag deployed

OK, so I was getting a pull across this river, it was sand bottom and I got a little stuck. as I was getting pulled across, I droped in a rut and smacked the frame rail on a rock. My airbags went off but it wasn't at more the 5mph. What gives? I thought these things weren't supossed to deploy unless it is at 15 or 20 mph? Anyone else have any problems with thier airbags. I figure I have to go to the dealer and see what they can do. btw, anybody know of a good dealer in central texas, I bought mine from a place in Houston and I don't want to drive two hours to have them look at it. Thanks for any help!

Wow,that's a rough off road trip! They are designed to go off when the sensors detect a sudden collision,or shock. Sounds like you hit something pretty hard. The dealer,or a certified body shop is your only option. I feel for you,it's gonna be expensive ,,,,,,98

As far as I know (knowledge based on 97 and 98 models) there are 3 sensors. Two front crash sensors and one safing sesnor mounted inside the airbag diagnostic module. From what I have read and heard they will go off at any speed as long as there is suffienct G force, no speed mentioned. You must of hit pretty hard or just happened to hit a sweet spot for the airbag.

I seem to remember seeing some airbags for sale on ebay, so I would look there. If you have any kind of knowledge about tools etc...you will be able to change them its pretty easy actually...good luck.

I urge you to get the airbags replaced at a reputable business. The news is full of people going to some "Joe Bob's body shop" to get airbags replaced. Later they find out they put in non functioning units, or ones that are not even made for that vehicle. Only because some people got suspicious and had them checked did they find out before they really needed them.
Air bags are a high priority theft item and ones you get from Ebay or on the street somewhere are most likely hot. On the news a couple of nights ago they said that most major insurance companies will pay to have them properly replaced. Since they are very expensive, the $500 deduct sounds pretty cheap. I don't see how you can blame Ford for this one.

Yea, I'm going to a dealership to have these replaced, no way am I trusting anybody else. Although, from all I've heard of the crooked and stupid dealers I'm not so sure...but I'm going to do it anyways. $500 is a lot cheaper than $3k, that's about what 2 airbags cost, then there's installation and all that. They might even tell me the frame is no good anymore, although it is just slightly malformed at the very front. My Dad's been a mechanic all his life, he'll know how to smell out BS from the dealership. He's just too pissed with me to do it quite yet. Plus, I am moving this weekend and I need to use my truck, so I'm gonna hang onto it for a week and drive my girlfriend's car. Thanks for the info though everyone!

I think Maxwell Ford is a pretty good dealership for body work. I don't like Covert & I have heard bad things about Draeger

Really?! I've heard bad things about Maxell. Haven't heard anything about the others. Plus there is Leif Johnson but I don't know anything about them either. My dad took the truck this weekend. He took it in to Texan, where we bought it from, in Katy. We'll see what happens, aparently, all the dealerships around Houston are busy with flood problems.
Thanks though...

Air bag help

I had a similar problem this weekend as r0land after pulling my 19ft boat out of the water. For some reason both of my airbags deployed. I have no idea why or what I should do about getting them fixed. The truck is a '99 F150 and is no longer under warranty. Could anyone give me some help?
