Post cup holders

I have had my truck for about a year now and I just noticed that there are lights on each side of the dash cup holders. There is this rubber fringe on one side of each side and it was under there. Why did I not see this before. Does anyone else have the same problem. What is the point of having lights if you cannot see them? Has anyone made any modifications to this?

Cool

Here you go I got the LED's from Radio shack and wired them into the ashtray light.

I've since added a light to the lighter/power port.

Thanks to Firezap`s idea I outfitted my center console with the same lights. The cupholders there were hard to see and with the LED`s from Radio Shack it illuminates them very nicely. My wife had me do the same to her Focus center console. I noticed the lights also in the dash cupholder but since I just use them for change storage and not much else I opted to do my center console.

Thanks for the idea Firezap!!!

Cool

The cupholder look really funny when you have a Sprite or other clear container in there.

Glad to help. The lighter/power port light is the next one up from the cupholders. works great just enough light to see.

Yes it's in this massive pile of information somewhere. I can't remember who did it first, but they put LED's in there and had pretty good install pictures and description. Would have been w/in the last 6 months. Maybe somebody will help out here.

It's real easy to do.

First you need to get the LED's from radio shack. They are flush mount green for a 12 volt system.

Now to get the cupholder out. Take a flat head screwdriver and look for the tabs (1 each side) that holds it in. Do 1 side a little then the other then back to first until it's out.

Then pull the ashtray light out (kinda hard os be patient). Drill the holes and put the LED's in. I used wire splice connecters. You can see the tabs in this photo.

Hope this helps

Firezap,
I know about the wierd green glow. I drink MelloYello all the time and in the truck its usually in a big clear plastic cup with ice. Makes the glass light all up green but its easy to see

2001,
When I installed mine I followed Firezaps idea and tapped into the line that illuminates the lights in the dash cup holder.
If you have the Captains chairs and center console its real easy. The cup section lifts out of the console itself by pulling firmly. I drilled the holes and put the LEDS in the front part of the holder so they shined back. I then soldered both LEDS and 2 sections of wire and ran them under the carpet towards the heat ducts. Coat hangar comes in real handy for this. Pulled it up through the center of dash and connected it in to the light behind ashtray. The light is attached to a connector and a short piece of wire so it was easy to remove and tap the wires into it before replacing. The best part of using this "Power" suppl is it will dim the LEDs as you dim the other lights.
Sorry I`m not real good at giving directions on this but I know Firezap had a good post on it before.

Question

Ok, the cupholders don't look too bad ... but how on earth did you get an LED near the power port? It'd be really nice to have one of those.. trying to put a hot cigarette lighter back into it when it's dark can be a challenge sometimes (since the red glow goes out quickly )

Finally done, sort of. I used Firezap's idea with the led's in the cup holders and powerpoint areas. I used bright blue led's...way too bright in fact. So I came up with this. http://http://www.mts.net/~pschul/truckmod.htm

I used the next size up LED for the power port and used a small strap of metal to hold it. I ran the wires over to the ashtray light. the hardest part is getting the light in the right place. Mine is closer to the lighter then the power port (oh well).
