Dirty Steering Wheel

I have a leather wrapped steering wheel and the leather is dirty. I've tried cleaning it with water like it says in the owners manual and I've tried some leather cleaner but to no avail. Anyone have any suggestions. It is tan leather.

Is the dirt simply ground in 'dirt' or is it a combination of grease and such? What kind of leather cleaner did you try (brand)?

The dirt seems ground in, it is only in the places on the wheel where I seem to hold onto it (9o'clock- 12o'clock). I guess it's a combo of dirt and skin oil. I don't remember what type of cleaner I used but I do know it didn't work.

The guys with the King Ranches talk about dirty steering wheels a lot. They use Johnson's baby bath soap or something like that. The before and after pictures looked like it worked pretty good.
Do a search on baby soap or steering wheel and you should get a bunch posts.

You might try saddle soap and a soft brush. Maybe an old toothbrush. It can't be too aggresive, just something that will get into the little groves.

O.K. Here's the scoop! I used Johnson's Baby Wash and it worked great on the dirt. However the spots where is was most concerned about it seems the outer shell of the leather is gone. It is rough to the touch and feels like brushed leather. Does anyone know if there's a way to repair this? It is at the top of the wheel where I grab to go around turns. It cleaned up pretty good and I put some leather conditioner on the entire wheel after cleaning because the soap definately dried the wheel out. It does look alot better overall!
