bABY oIL

Hello everyone. Yes, you got it right I have been using Baby Oil on Dash. I have been afraid to use anything else. Can anyone tell me a good product with UV protection they have been using for a good while that hasn't cause the dash to dry, crack, or turn black.

Thanks everyone for your Info.

Okay folks... I've been advocating that the dash boards in the NEW VEHICLES (our trucks included) are ****NOT**** made out of the same materials that our parents' dashboards were made of (vinyl covered foam).

Hence, you don't have to worry about cracking. It's not going to happen unless you let the thing sit out in the sun for about the next 75 years (which you may plan on doing... not sure).

Baby oil, by far and away, would be right up there around the last thing on the face of the earth that I would put on my dash. Sure, it adds a luster, but, from a UV protection standpoint, it's awful. I mean, do you hear of anyone going out to the beach and using baby oil as a sunscreen? NO, they're using it to INTENSIFY the suns' effects on their skin.

Use 303 or Vinylex on the dash for sun protection. Fading is about the only thing that you really need to worry with...

I am of the camp that recommends to NOT put anything on the dash. A bright, sunny day will create glare that becomes a driving hazard for you and everyone else on the road.

Black Magic

I have been using black magic pro shine protectant with its long lasting shine for years in my 97f150. It's a no water formula that offers supperior protection for ninyl, leather, rubber, and plastics.
I use this stuff on my dash, seat trim, door and pannel trim and dome light trim. This stuff protects and gives you an ultimate shine.... Only thing i hate about it is that it costs me 7.50 or so for 23 oz's from autozone where I reside.

It's really sunny around here too and I've never noticed a glare issue. The only thing that bothers me is the brightness from the sun itself. For that, I use this!

so you guys are saying that you do use baby oil on the dash?

The additional glare may not be a problem for you but it could affect other drivers.

Heck, I'm a better driver after 12 beers than many are sober. But I'm not advocating that for anyone because it varies by driver so the best thing is to recommend the least dangerous scenario.

So if you guys have no problem using the product in those conditions, continue to do so... I just wouldn't recommend it to all unless they know beyond doubt that it wont be an issue.

IMHO, 303 gives it more of a satin finish instead of a glossy shine. No glare here.

RP,
I had a '92 dash that starting cracking around '00 (of course it was a GM product )

Yeah, I used 'parent's dashboards' as a relative term. Maybe it was more recently that they have gone to plastic composite exclusively... *shrugs*

RP said it best... the new dash materials do not need protectant. Any product used is purely for aesthetics.

That being said, don't use any product that's going to make it worse than it was before.
