As a quick down and dirty place to find the directions.

Try www.muthco.com.

Select the signal mirrors for your truck ( just stay with me, I know you don't want mirrors ), and down load the pdf file with the instructions for installing the mirrors.

In the instructions, the door panel removal is part of the install, so this would point to all the screws that might be hidden under removable panels.

Dow a right click, save as on the link below and check it against your door type. These are for the XLT and Lariat, so it maybe different from the XL... Don't know for sure I have a SCrew so it is completly differnet.

http://www.muthco.com/techsupport/pdfs/21000360.pdf

If not, you can always try www.installdr.com and maybe that would have it for an XL, if the instructions above are not correct for the XL.

Hope this helps somewhat...

oops..

Sorry forgot that part.

There used to be 2 methods for holding the window crank on.

Mind you I have not looked at a window crank for more then a decade, so be cautions with this info, it is severely dated, and may not be the case any more.

1. A screw behind the center caps. You would pop the cap off the center part of the crank and there was a screw behind there, that held the handle to the spline shaft.

2. a Spring washer that cliped onto the window crank, and the base of the spline shaft. You would pull this out with needle nose pilars and the handle would just come off.

Maybe waiting to see if another posts on the topic is in order, as this is VERY dated info. Just be careful using this info, as it may not be the case anymore, a lot of things can change from the F100 of 1981 ( last time I had cranks )

Cool

sscully is right, but Ford threw a little twist into the mix...

My '98 XL had a hex screw right through the handle into the window crank.

To get to it, you have to separate the handle. It has a cover that runs the entire length of the handle, not just at the crank.

If you look carefully behind the handle at the crank, you can see a little tab that you push out with a small screwdriver.

Once you do that, the cover will pivot away from the crank, rotating at the **** end of the handle...

Once you rotate it, you will be able to get at the hex screw.

Hope this helps...

Talking thanks

Sscully and B-man, thanks, you are both right, once the door handle and window crank come off the door panel is easy to remove. New speakers sound so much better than the stockers. Now driving my work truck is much more enjoyable

thanks again
