Question 912 vs 921 led for third brake & cargo lights?

Can the standard 912 bulbs in the third brake light/cargo lights be replaced with a 921 led or must it be a 912 led? My understanding is that a standard 921 can get too hot but I wouldn't see that as a problem with an led model. Also, should the led for the brake light be red so the lens color doesn't get washed out by a white led? Thanks.

With LED lights, there's no difference. They make a light, and call it 912 & 921. Just get something that's not too big to fit into that little space. The alternative is to install an LED lamp unit.

And, yes, you want to use a RED LED in the brake light socket, since the red lens of the brake light filters out all wavelengths that are NOT red. A red LED will be brighter.

There is an issue with the OEM lamp housing. It leaked. An updated part with a bigger gasket was released. For anyone replacing lamps, it would be a good time to revise your truck. A safe bet would be to buy the Motorcraft part, and make sure that you get the new part with the thicker foam seal. Dorman makes an OEM replacement for a lower price. Double check the gasket. A lot of the "internet" parts sellers under generic names have gaskets which are thicker than OEM. Double check those if you buy them. Make sure that you can return the part if the gasket is not thick enough. I bought an aftermarket LED lamp, which was plug-and-play. The gasket was sufficient. I have not had any leaks.
