Has anyone put a 3" Projector into a Lightning Headlight Shell?

I'm still in awe of everyone who has done their own projector conversion. I got myself a spare set of headlights and before I jump in the water, I figured maybe I should ask the questions.

I think the 2-1/2" projector looks a _little_ meager in the Lightning's headlight shell, so I'm wondering about the 3" size. Is a Morimoto FX-R 3.0" projector a good choice for a 3" unit?

I liked that idea with the hole saw, and since I have two drill presses (tabletop & floor units), I think I can cut the hole OK as long as I pay attention to a good How-To.

I'll be mounting 3.0" RX350s here within a month or so. It IS doable.

Very easily actually and will look great.
3" or 2 1/2" ( depending on how far you want the projector to sit back) hole saw and a notch for the solenoid and boom it's in place.

Had no issues when I did my FXR 2.5 rear mounted projectors. Plenty of room for 3" unit

So there's no problem with the front of the projector actually hitting the Lightning outer clear shell? I'm not thinking the rear has a clearance problem... but I was concerned about the front. I really have no clue about the various projectors, but the 2.5" ones seem to be too small for the size of the Lightning shell. JMHO LOL. I still tip my hat to you guys that have done this.

So once you get the two parts separated, is there a method for finding the perfect centered location... or do you want to be off-center to accommodate the notch? I was thinking that you would place the reflector side up towards the hole saw and drop it down gently and mark the diameter with a sharpie, then drill some holes along the line at 12, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 o'clock and use those if you were going from the backside. Or simply blue tape the inside and drill the primary hole from the front?

Here ya go, same concept for your year truck.

As for hitting anything in the front that all depends on the shroud you would install and how wide it is.

Mine was less conventional because it was rear mounted, so I can't really offer much advice or pointers

I have 3" FX-R's in Lightning buckets, with Apollo 2, flat top shrouds, and they fit fine. Just make sure they are far enough back, so the shroud won't contact the lens. Let it all hang out the back of the bucket, and seal it up. I used aluminum tape, and it works good. Plus It can be removed for projector adjustment\upgrades later on. I used a modified JNC mount set-up, using 1" angle brackets, for rotational adjustment, and with the aluminum tape to seal the back, I can fix any issues which arise. Search out the JNC mounting method on HIDPlanet, if you are not familiar with it.
You might need to add clearance in the rear of the headlight/rad panel, but your dremel will be all warmed up from the retrofit job

It's worth the hassles when you are finished.
