Can I install fog lights on 3 way switch?

Hi,

I've decided to install factory fog lights on my 2007 F150 XLT SCREW.

I bought the bumper and the fog lights and then discovered my truck is not prewired for fog lights.

I bought a a 3 position switch (on-on-off) with the intention of being able to turn the fog lights on any time (with high beams or with just parking lights) or just have them come on with my low beams.

Will it work if I splice the wire from the relay in two and connect to the two positions on the switch...and then run a wire from each position on the switch to the appropriate wires on the headlight switch (tap into the brown for always on, tap into dark blue for only on with low beams)?

Any help would be much appreciated!

your relay wire does not need to be doubled with a 3 way switch. get your main power for relay off battery, Trigger wire to your switch, then go from the switch to your other 2 inputs.

I'm not sure if that switch will work or not. I don't know a lot about the electrical systems. My factory switch pulls out for the fog lights to come on. I can run them with the parking lamps or the heads. I would think that with that switch there is 't a way to turn them off unless it is like mine and pulls out slightly.

thanks zrock that makes it easier. So if I wire its this way I'll be able to control the fogs as described?

big B I was going to use a factory switch but I gave up on that because it seems a lot easier to use a different switch and make my own harness.

Got it, for some reason I had it in my head that you had a factory switch. After re-reading your original post I see my error. With that being said you can disregard my post

yep should work because the switch will be taking the 2 inputs and sending them one at a time to the relay as your select the switch position

so I received the switch today. I'm having a little difficulty with the wiring. I understand how to wire up a 3 way switch for normal use but I'm not quite sure how to do it for my application. The switch has 6 pins. How do I wire them?

Here is the switch

7 ground
2 hot in for one position
3 hot out for one position
5 hot for second position
6 hot out for second position
3&6 you should be able to combine

ok I'm back again. I wired up the switch as instructed and the fog lights almost worked they I wanted them to. But I realized I was using a off-on-on switch when I needed to use a on-off-on switch.

So I bought a new switch and tried connecting it almost the same way...that's when I fried my wires and almost burnt my truck down.

I've gone out and bought all new wires and am going to try again. Sorry to bother you again but can you help me with this new switch...which wires go where.

Here's a tip...

Before you get into the real deal, mess with lower amperage... like a 1.5v or 9v battery with a test block, wire, and a multimeter.

When in doubt, bench what you are about to do, BEFORE you do it on the final project.

May take a little more time, but it saves things from getting fried, catching fire, or causing more headaches. Plus you learn...

I've scrapped the 3 position switch...my truck has daytime running lights which affected the way I wanted the switch to work. I'm now putting in a regular switch and I'll run it off of the parking lights.

manualF150, I totally agree with you...I wish I didn't have to of learned that the hard way!

zrock, thanks for all of your help...I wouldn't even of known where to begin without it.
