Need advice, want to use foglights as primary headlights....

Like the title says, I will be covering my headlights up with tinted covers to look more uniform with the trucks black paint. So any help on what I should lean towards? 08 lariat. I seen the projectors on eBay...they any good? I prefer a white light over the blues purples pink etc... obviously the brighter the better and another key here a headlight beam pattern instead of foglight short distance only like pattern. Thanks in advance!!!

Hi.

Hmmm ... sounds illegal, lol.

There is really Only one effective solution given you want/need to retain at least some semblance of headlight-like beam pattern and functionality without undue glare, scatter or negative impact on oncoming motorists:

One of these:

http://www.theretrofitsource.com/com...l#.UyrUFqhdVog

http://www.theretrofitsource.com/com...l#.UyrUOahdVog

The second one will provide more output; the first one will be much easier to retrofit.

For how it looks and results, see installs in this thread:

https://www.f150online.com/forums/il...t-members.html

Bear in mind, the fogs are NOT at optimal height ( unless yer truck is lifted ), so expect poorer performance versus doing the exact same thing to yer actual heads.

If you attempt to install anything else, don't bother as alternatives such as straight PnP HID capsules in the existing housings, ebay garbage, LEDs, cubes etc, will not provide adequate - or even acceptable - lighting to allow you to actually see and drive safely at night.

More info:

Install guides: http://www.theretrofitsource.com/diy...on-guides.html

good luck

I think it will be illegal, especially if you live where there is state inspections.

I've seen people (at least in NC) get away with having the tinted headlight covers on their headlights during the day, and then take them off at night so their headlights are still functional. AVS makes some. That would be the only "safe" way to do what you are wanting to do. I wouldn't want to compromise light output, your safety, and others safety for looks.

I agree.

The problem is, if you answer some folks with advice that is perceived as an attempt to steer them away from their preconceived / intended goals (intentionally or not), they sometimes kinda/sorta tend to get upset. And the histrionics begin.

Additionally, there are a few members who also get rather uppity because, instead of just answering the question asked, you had the temerity to offer another member said alternative(s) in the first place. They know who they are. Easily recognizable, as they wear this particular attribute like a Sheriff sporting a badge , or a vampire hunter clutching his silver cross

Having said that, I could care less. I LOVE garlic!

OP - in that Retrofit Members thread you may have seen a couple folks with retrofitted HID in blacked-out housings, and clear, untinted lenses. That would look real good on a black truck - and keep you both legal and safe. And provide fantastic accurate output. AND look waaaay cool Savvy?

Here's an example pitcher ( kudos to good ol' Saleen1013 ):

Perhaps not, but you definitely are cutting down on yer headlight's output. And if'n they be halogen, they be need'n awl th' hep they kin git

But - thankee fer the linky - that clear stuff looks real innersetin'!

I'd def just paint the housings black or get an $80 black eBay set. I'm all for people doing weird things, but completely blacking out heads so they can't even be used and trying to make fogs as good as headlights is just a bad idea.

The problem with using your fogs as main lights is to get them at a good driving height so you can have some kinda distance you will be throwing them to high and into oncoming traffics eyes..

Random idea but it could work, how about buy that grille that has the offroads lights on them and retro those? They are roughly at the same height as your headlights so you can keep the 2.5" drop that normal headlights have and still have decent low beam distance and moot blind anyone..

Dis grille to be exact
https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...293&styleid=17

Ooorrr do what Kmac said and get black headlights..

Matchboxes are the only ones that will fit in the fogs, and if you only drive in the city, they will work, I guess.

I would just install some real projectors into your heads, and black them out like what was mentioned above. I did the same thing with my heads and they look completely black with the lights off.

Thanks for the thoughts and comments... I was going to get the auto vent shade headlight covers like pictured up above. A beam of light will still get through but was hoping a good upgrades to the fogs could really help out. I'm not convince on any of the headlight styles I've seen yet. I just like th style and simplicity of how these covers lo ok. I also thought about getting a set of super bright headlight bulbs to help the situation. Sorry I just noticed I made it sound like I wasn't even gonna use headlights at all.

Hi.

Actually, Msall retro'd a pair of MH1's into his 04-05 fogs, lol. You can make anything fit if'n ye want to!

Hi.

Ya - I understood you were after augmentation. However, "superbright" headlight bulbs will only marginally help.

I don't know what you don't like aboot Saleen's work. Those things look spectacular - especially on a black truck. You don;t need to use the amber halos. Without them it's totally blacked out, yet fully functional.

I'm guessing you have never seen a projector's width, intensity, cutoff or precision in person. If you had, your mind would almost assuredly be made up

Lastly - I truly believe the ventshades headlite covers are Soooo 1990's - just like those rear window slat thingies. And dingo *****.

Think this over some .....

good luck
MGD

PS - you other jokers - fully blacked out headlites using halogens is plain silly - it must still have a chrome main reflector to work at all. That's where the projector (with a black cutoff shield), and a painted shroud come in. I think the goal here is not to see any chrome. WTF were you two thinkin'?

The headlights on my truck are really only $80 and are pretty darn black. I think headlight covers look super ghetto and Cholo personally, but to each their own. They aren't really any headlight bulbs short of a retrofit that are powerful enough to shine through tint effectively.
