Short in headlight lever

Help! My left turn signal started giving me problems today. It appeared that my front left bulb was burned out. I bought another one and while pulling the old one out, I realized that it was not burned out. I cleaned the contacts and replaced it with the same results. If you have the key on and turn on the left blinker, it will not flash. If you pull back the lever to flash your headlights, it starts working. As long as you hold in that lever, the light works fine. What gives???
Thanks!!

Yes, I have tilt steering. I called the problem area the headlight lever. Maybe turn signal lever would be better. The left blinker clicks at double speed but the inside turn signal light does not illuminate. When I pull in the direction signal lever, flashing my headlights while the lever is in the left turn position, the blinker starts working and it runs regular speed.

Its called the turn stalk. Go ahead and remove the steering clumn neck and look around the turn stalk area, you should find a wire that is loose. Its a common problem with tilt-steering columns.

Good call! I tilted the steering wheel all the way up and the blinker started working. When you say remove the column neck, are you referring to the cover around the column? Thanks!
