Need advice about adding backup lights

I have a 2010 Screw cab and wanna add extra backup lights. Ive found a few threads here of guys doing it but having it on a seperate switch. Ive also seen guys adding 55 watt lights off the tail light, which doesnt seem right to me. I want them to come on automatically when it goes into reverse. Could I tie into the trailer wiring or what is the best method?

Thanks for your help!

I just had an auto electrician install these for me http://www.amazon.com/Navigator-NV-5.../dp/B001BB3IRO

He tapped into the trailer hitch wires and installed a fuse also. So it comes on in reverse like u want. But dont get those lights, they throw more of a beam than a wide illumination so right now its not helping too much haha.... plus my rear window is extremely tinted so that affects it too..

I installed some Hella Optilux 1500 (55W ea) as aux. reverse lights on my '99 ... one of the most useful mods I've done to date. I wired the lights to a SPDT switch, so they can either be on with reverse lights / off / on with parking lights, which works out real good.

Most of the time the switch is in the off position (don't need the add'l light during the day or in town at night). When I'm wheeling at night, I switch them to on w/ reverse so they come on every time I put it in reverse. If I need to hitch a trailer or close a gate at night, I switch them to on w/ parking lights so they can be on w/ the truck in Park (if the parking lights are on).

I would strongly suggest wiring them w/ a relay, especially if you use lights w/ any kind of power. I would also suggest you mount the lights so they are protected from water/debris thrown up by the back tires.

HERE'S the wiring diagram I used (see post #2).

Good luck w/ your project ... it's well worth doing.

In addition to fairlaner's post above, here is my mod:

As said above, ALWAYS use a fuse and relay.
