High Beams Stick/Stuck On!

Hey guys,
I ordered an HID conversion kit (35W, 6000K) from Todd at Retro-Solutions for my 2007 F-150 SuperCrew. I installed the headlight kit first, with the relay harness, as recommended.

After installing just the headlight conversion kit, I noticed that, if I had the fog lights on and switched to high beams, I couldn't switch back to low beams! The fog lights come back on after I switch back to low, but the headlights stay on high beam. To get the high beams off, I have to push in the headlight switch (shut off fog lights).

Todd told me that I needed to do one of a few things to fix this. One was to install HID fogs (H10) as well, to "even out the resistance in the circuit".

I did that this weekend. Problem is still there! I can't get the headlights to switch back to low beam after switching to high beam. To get them to switch back to low beam, I have to push the headlight switch in (shut fog lights off).

Any suggestions to fix this problem?? It's driving me (and oncoming drivers) nuts!!

Thanks, guys!

that guy took you and your wallet for a ride!

you have three wires going into your headlight plug, high, low, and ground. make sure they are wired properly and you dont have them swapped around

Yeah, I'm now seeing that! I had the choice of the following, to fix the "high beams sticking on" problem:

1. Bambi mod
2. 'Lightbox'
3. Adding H10 fog HID kit with relay harness to "equalize resistance"

I chose #3, as I figured this would both a) fix my problem, b)look and function nice/cool, and c) negate having to 'tap into' my fog light relay with a chunk of wire.

I have contacted Todd to voice my displeasure in his dishonesty (I'm sure he'll come on here and try to defend himself...wait for it), and the tone I got was "Well, you could have just done the Bambi mod for free", which tells me that he isn't surprised that the fog kit didn't fix the problem. I went into this transaction, thinking that Todd was this great and honest guy, but apparently he too has been bitten by the "urge for the ol' mighty dollar" bug like everyone else these days.

All I wanted was a lighting upgrade, and now I'm left with a $400 problem. Think twice before installing Retro-Solutions HID Kits in your F-150. And no, I'm not usually one to bad-mouth companies...I try to give retailers the benefit-of-the-doubt. Bit me in the ***, and I feel stupid.

Back to the subject-at-hand...anyone have a fix (besides "Bambi Mod") for this?

Thanks again, folks.

Did you try my solution above? If not, a bambi mod may be the fix. It isn't hard to do

Nope, haven't had a chance. I'm trying to avoid the bambi mod; I'd like the system to function properly (as factory), if possible. A bambi mod is my "last resort". Besides, the link that is posted everywhere for the bambi mod how-to doesn't work in any of the old threads anymore. I'm not 100% sure how to do it. Thanks again.

I know this going to sound really 'off the wall' , but, have you (dubs 17) replaced your dash bulbs with leds ??? The reason I ask is because I had a similar problem with mine (07) with the Bambi Mod. When switching to high (Brights) the lights would not return to low beam UNTIL I removed the LED HI beam indicator bulb and replaced it with the regular bulb. I know...it sounds "out there", but that is what fixed mine. Just my .02.5

Nope, haven't done that. My dome lights are LED, but I highly doubt that would have anything to do with it. The only other LEDs are my licence plate bulbs, cargo lights, side marker (amber) lights, and reverse lights. Would the front side marker LED bulbs do this?? I wonder. Anyone think that's a possibility? Never thought of that...

Probably not as I have leds in everything you do as it sounds. Just had to remove them from the instrument cluster to solve the same problem in mine. The fact that changing the led out of the HI beam indicator tells me that there is some kind of resistance issue at work here, somewhere. Wish I could of be more help.

Just don't use your fogs. Oh thats not an option, Do a projector retrofit. Oh still not an option, do the 10 minute Bambi mod (taking your time). You still don't want to. Take the PNP kit out and send it back. Then install some silver-stars. Take your pick, Problem solved.

The easiest/fastest mod you can do. All you are doing is grounding that leg on the relay to the frame.

I was waiting for the obligatory "smartass comment", and here it is, lol. You're seemingly missing my point. I was told that everything should work "as factory", without the bambi mod, so I'm exploring the possibility that something is wrong with my setup that is causing my problem. I'm not into duct tape for fixing things...I like to fix things properly, if I can. Thanks for the link (in case I have to, after all, resort to it). Later.

OK, ok The problem is the HID bulbs them self. They are all on the same principle just different quality. Your normal headlight bulbs have a high and low filament, I know you know this. A HID bulb is just one light. When the highs are on the bulbs gets pulled up/down/in or out, to change the pattern in the reflector to go higher. This is done by magnets usually. What happens is when you take the highs off, the magnet doesn't get the pulse to let go, so your stuck in highs. By doing the Bambi mod you are grounding the relay so the fogs stay on with brights. It will also give the the pulse to put the bulb in the low spot.
I'm rushed writing this but it should still make sense.
Oh and this mod requires no duct tape.
