A/C Compressor cycles on/off continously

I am very confused?? Has anyone encountered this situation. I have a 97 F150 S/C Lariat 4x4 with the 5.4. The A/C blows out cold air but the compressor clutch engages on and off in rapid succession probably 50-60% of the time making a very annoying clicking noise. I am concerned that the clutch will burn out and damage itself or the rest of the system. I have had the pressures checked and the high and low pressure sensors replaced but the problem is still there. Prior to taking it to the Ford Dealer ($$$$$), I am asking if anyone has encountered the same and if so, what was done to fix the problem.
Thanks,

the compressor will cycle on and off.....

while the truck is sitting still and no air is passing through the condensing coil. if it,s doing it in a rapid sussestion then it may be low on charge. you may also have a resticted tube or orfice.take it to an automotive a/c shop instead of ford. look in the phone book, there are some shops that do a/c only and are the place to take it if you want to save money

I had the same thing happen to my 97 F-150 with a 4.6. Mine would blow cold air but also cycle continuously. The problem turned out to be the cycling switch. A new one cost me less than $20.00 at the dealer. It is located next to the fire wall on the right hand side, on a tube by/from the receiver/dryer. All you do is disconnect the plug and unscrew the switch. There is a schrader valve in the fitting, so you loose very little freon. Ensure you also replace the o-ring.

Thanks yankee7985. I will try this out first then go with the other idea afterwards if this does not work. Whatever the case, if it gets fixed, I will post the fix here.

in cool condtions with blower set on low speed. the a/c will cylce fast. if its hot out side and blower is on high. the a/c should not cyle that much. i just wanted to say. if you replace the low pressure sw. that the oring is not sandard size as rest of sys is. its an odd size. dealer has them cheep. ask for low press sw oring. its orange. a regular one will work for awhile. but it will leak. trust me on this. good luck
