Question Heater/AC Temp Control

Heater/AC Temp Control
(Moved from "Electrical" area)

In my '98 F150 - the temp control **** is developing a sort of "disconnected" feel. When rotated, it feels as if it is gripping and releasing as it moves. If rotated back and forth several to numerous times, it seems to "hitch up" and do what it's supposed to do. Suggestions? If this involves removing that panel, how do I do that?

tnx

A/C control **** breaks

They break the platic gets a crack in it a no longer will turn the control.

My just broke on a 99 F-150. Went to the dealer and he even knew the part number in his head.

Claims they break all the time cost 4.95 for a new one. Just pushes back on.

Sounds easly enough. So, the **** just pulls off? Is it "keyed" so it will only go back on one way?

Thanks for the fast reply - ain't technology great?

Yep,
It just pulls right off and it has a little flat spot to match up on the post.

point the control vertically and pull out. It requires very little force, so if you have to pull hard, it's not exactly "vertical". All Visteon HVAC controls do that (just try it on an F150 in the dealership show room)

Thanks, Corpsie. Will be on the way to the dealer soon to pick up the new ****. If all else fails - don't go for thepliers, check the vertical...

A quick pass by the parts counter Friday afternoon and all is well. Three years and nine months, 42k miles, and already this thing has cost me $5.58 for repairs. Sheesh.

She's had lots of oil and filters of all kinds and tires and spark plugs, but no repairs until now. Neither I nor Ford has spent a dime on this thing. Suppose they'll fix me up with a new King Ranch SC for saying so on TV?

Thanks for your help, guys. It wasn't complicated - but starting from the outside, I did not know that.

My A/C-Heater temp control ****, no longer has the constant tension it use to have. Now, when I turn the ****, it moves easier and does not adjust the temp as it should. I must push in on the **** and turn it very slowly to get the temp to adjust. Some times, I must repeat this process to change the temp. I have removed the ****, but I can not determine what needs to be replaced.

What part do I need?

Thanks.

Thanks SVT! I will get one next week.

........by the way, I saw that you were selling a forged 5.4 lightning shortblock on fordtruckworld. Then, I saw you selling your existing lightning engine on ebay. What project you have planned?

Actually I have built a "built" short block for my truck. We had something come up and need some money so I was going to sell it. But everything worked out and I didn't have to sell it afterall. So now the engine that is in my truck needs to be sold to finish the "built" engine build up.

Finally went by the local Ford dealership this morning. I pulled the temp. control **** off and took it in and asked if they had one like it. They did. However, it looked exactly the same as mine, meaning that, my old **** did not show any signs of wear when compared to the new one. I installed it and.......presto! My temp control works great now. It cost less than $5 bucks! Thanks again, SVT!!!!!!!

However............

Late this afternoon, I stated smelling radiator fluid in the cab. This has occurred in the past, but it was a heater hose clamp that leaked when I was under high revs (with the supercharger). However, this appears to not be the cause this time. Yet, it did get worse after I went to full throttle and then continued to get worse. I can find no leak under the hood. Even when someone eles revs the engine, I can not see any leaks at all.

I think it may be the heater core, but I do not see any fluid dripping or wet carpet on the passenger side under the glove compartment. The radiator fluid odor is very strong to night.
Infact, I can hardly stand to be in the cab for very long!
What is it???????

Hey Iron Horse,

You may not be able to see the leak, but you might try checking the carpet and the padding behind the front passenger side carpet to see if it is wet. Expensive fix if you have the garage do it.

Question A/C Control ****

Similar problem here... stuck on hot! However, I pulled off the control **** and used needle nose pliars to turn the control, but it makes no difference (still hot).

I don't see how replacing the **** will do anything different than I did with the pliars? Help please...

When I compared the new temp control **** to the stock ****, I saw no difference. I could not tell where my old **** was worn or broken. Yet, the second I put the new **** on, my temp control worked perfectly! The **** costs less than $5 bucks. A cheap part to eliminate as the potential problem.

.........however, I find it very odd that, after having this problem for about year, then on the SAME day that I fix the temp control, I start smelling radiator fluid fumes when I use the ac or heater.
