8mm wrench. Very difficult to access. Tight space. You can plug the wire harness into the old part, turn the switch, and verify that the gear shaft is not turning. Then plug the wire wire harness onto the new part, to be that the gear shaft is working, before you install. Also a good idea to reach up and manually manipulate the door to verify that the door isn't stuck or broken. The gear shaft has an arrow to match the arrow on the body for alignment. Splines must align properly for installation. Of course, the classic piece of wisdom is that you should only use OEM Ford Motorcraft parts. In this case, as in every case, it was a Ford Motorcraft part that failed. Look on the internet. They fail a lot. So do I want to install an aftermarket part? Well, there's no upgrade or performance part which will work better. It's not like getting a better (fill in the blank) from a racing catalog. There are lower price options from Rock Auto, Amazon, eBay. Or buy a generic aftermarket part from an O'Reilly, Auto Zone, or Pep Boys.
Apparently, Dorman is less than 1/2 the cost of Motorcraft, company tech support is active on Amazon as an Amazon Seller, and there is a "lifetime warranty".
You could remove the knee panel and gas pedal for better access. The right tools might make all the difference. I only had a 8mm box wrench. And I was too lazy to get the right tools.
