ac compressor clutch?
ac compressor clutch?
I bought a 97 F150 v6 4.2 with no ac compressor clutch. My manual has no info on this at all. Anybody have info on replacing the clutch, or point me to a diagram or info? Thanks in advance
The clutch usually comes with a compressor. So, if you buy a compressor, about $260 at NAPA and replace yours, you'll have the clutch. Of course, you will need to change out the dryer, add oil, vacuum out the system, etc. to get the ac working. If that is all that is wrong with the system. I just got a quote today from a Ford Dealer for replacing my compressor and it was $1240.
I may have misled you. I did a search on compressor replacement of this forum and read several threads on replacement of the clutch alone. So, IF that is all you need, it can be replaced without buying the whole compressor. And, depending on where you live, you may be able to find someone to replace a compressor a lot cheaper than the Ford Dealer, probably about half.
Do a similar search of this forum and you will probably get all the info you need.

If the clutch is missing the shim is probably missing to. Mine was $38.00 on line. (Clutch)
Check to see if you can spin the compressor by hand. I don't know how you will be able to get a hold of the shaft without the clutch in place though. I'm no pro at this but I'm learning quickly. I bought the clutch and pulley only to find out the compressor was locked up.
