AC compressor clutch screw size
AC compressor clutch screw size
Hello, I have a 2004 F150 FX4 since the beginning of the warm season my ac has not been functional. I finally had some time to check it out today and i noticed that a round metal piece had fallen off of something in the engine bay. I searched online and found it to be the ac compressor clutch.
I put the clutch on the compressor without bolting it down and I GOT COLD AIR. I was pretty relived i found the problem
Now i have to find the screw that holds it down because it wasn't on the clutch. So I am making this thread to ask what size the screw is and how long it is so I can enjoy some cold air while driving.
Below is the part I found circled in red. Its the one with three round pieces that look like a triforce. I need the screw that goes in the middle that secures it to the ac compressor.

M8 x 25 mm for the bolt. Common hardware store item.
You'll also probably need the shim that goes between the clutch plate and the pulley. Basically a thin washer of a thickness I've never measured or seen posted. Your Ford parts dept can probably get you one if needed.

Great. Thanks for the info about the screw. Would I need a washer for it? a locking one or plain one?
How would I know if I need the shim? How many does it need? Could you possibly post a picture?
Thanks again.

here are the ford part numbers for the bolt and the shims.
19D648 -- A/C clutch hub spacer
N805332-S58-- A/C clutch bolt
you need to check the air gap between the pully and clutch. it should be (0.014-0.030in).
if the air gap is wrong, you need to remove the clutch and insert the shims at the bottom of clutch shaft, and if it hasnt fallen all the way out, the original shims should be in place still.
there is just a small flat washer inbetween the bolt and the compressor clutch.
almost forgot, the torque on the retaining bolt is 10ft lbs.
hope this helps

Identical problem, except mine took an M6 and front washer
Had IDENTICAL problem, bolt was completely MISSING, except luckily the clutch plate was still riding around on the front of the non-rotating compressor shaft! My (wife's) 2004 F-150 4.6L Eng. VIN "W" required a M6-1.0 x 25mm bolt, not a M8! The 25mm long bolt from Advance Auto Parts, Dorman #780-225, was a little long and bottomed before snugging to the front of the clutch plate. Original shim / washer inside clutch plate hub retained for proper "air-gap" spacing. A thick flat washer and a lock washer (for extra measure) under the bolt head solved the problem nicely. VIOLA, Air Conditioning again! Relatively straight-forward fix. Thank you FORD for not properly securing or designing the A/C compressor clutch plate system sufficiently.
