A/C recharge problems

My '97 Lariat is blowing warm air so I bought a recharge kit and completed (successfully) my wifes Mercury and tried it on the "low" side of my truck and the "kit" coupling will NOT properly attach to the fitting...I brought it back to Auto Zone and the service guy tried it also and it doesnt seem to "Hold on" to the fitting...tried a brass fitting as well to no avail....HELP!!! Its geetin hot in the Motor City!!Any body having this issue?? I'm told it IS the proper "Low" side....it (coupling) goes on but expells refridgerent, and wont "lock" on like it did on my wifes Mercury....Weird......

Maybe try another kit. I'm sure the fittings on those kits are cheap and you could have screwed it up on the car.

My guess is you're trying to put iit on the high side fitting.

Where is this fitting located on your truck?

No,
The "high" side fitting doesnt fit at all...the low side fitting goes on, but wont "hold" like on my wifes car....Also tried a new brass fitting instead of the plastic one that came with the kit...still confused over this issue...??The fitting is locaed on the passenger side next to the fuse panel...I believe on the evaporater tank.

I thought the fitting more towards the radiator was the low side...

That would be the HIGH side...

If the low side service port is undamaged, the the connector is the problem (and vice versa).

The low/high side port(s) have NEVER been serviced, I ve owned it since new(Fall '07), and I've never had the A/C charged....guess I shouldnt complain...but upon removing protective cap-the fitting looked brand new....so the fitting has never been exposed....maybe it's a factory defect?? I'm wondering if there is "Another" port somewhere?? Recall??? Who knows..I've got a lot of people puzzeled..on this one....

I also had a problem with my 97 a few days ago. The Low side was bleeding off during the check. It would lock on the fitting but slowly bleed off and would not service. I ended up pushing on the low side fitting durng the check and servicing. Kind of awkward but it worked. This was with a high end brass coupling, not the plastic one. It also worked fine on both of my other vehicles but not the truck.

Mine bled off also....What do you mean by "pushing" on the low side as I attempted to hold it on also and it still would bleed off after holding it on....the gauge wouldnt even take a reading. Do you mean you held down the high-side when attempting to fill w/ gas? Please advise...Thanks

Mine would actually lock onto the low side fitting but would slowly bleed down while taking a static reading. I pushed on the fitting, (pushing it further onto the fitting), and the pressure would stabilize. If your quick disconnect is not locking onto the fitting then you may have a different problem. I have both the plastic and the brass fittings and they were both the same. There may have been some kind of flaw with the fittings. I thought it was my gauge fitting until it worked on all the rest of the cars.

I know this topic is old and you may have found the problem and resolved it but if you are having problems connecting the high (or low side) fittings from the recharge kit you may be fighting the system pressure. I'm not entirely sure what a recharge kit is but on my a/c manifold gauge set the valves need to be closed-off to system pressure in order to connect... especially if the system is running or has just been run. Just my 2 cents...
